Wraps a bit sun-faded, especially on spine; minor foxing to top edge; internally clean. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY PHELPS, dated in the year of publication, on the title page. It is addressed to Doug O'Dell, who was the proprietor of Chapel Hill Rare Books in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While the inscription is unsigned, the handwriting is identical to another item in my inventory that was signed by Phelps on the same date. The papers in this collection were written for a symposium held in honor of Phelps on the occasion of his retirement from Duke University, where he was a longtime professor of German. Phelps was also a pioneer in the use of computers in foreign language education. The two works are bound together in the original full calf with raised bands and blind rules near spine ends and on covers. The two original clasps are sturdy and close tightly. Front hinge repaired internally and externally with Japanese tissue. Else near very good. Some small scuffs to leather, thin slit at center of front cover. Some light to moderate damping and foxing. Light foxing and soiling to wraps; frontispiece foxed; foxing to p. 31, mostly affecting gutter; and a few traces of marginal foxing and soiling elsewhere. Apparent FIRST EDITION. Contains over 60 hymns performed by Rev. Fred MacArthur as the "Singing Parson" on WNBX Radio of Springfield, Vermont beginning in the late 1930's. A brief preface (p. [2]) discusses the history of the show, which was sponsored by the Wellwood Furniture Company of Springfield and was begun two years before this book was published. MacArthur (b. 1907), a native of Belmont, Mass., was the pastor of the Ludlow Baptist Church in Ludlow, Vermont. None of the songs contained in the book are his own.
