Spine a little sun-faded; wear and tiny tears to spine ends; moderate spotting to covers. Edges are a bit soiled, but the surface of the leaves, though mildly toned, are clean. Good plus. Early bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown: "Edward Perry, Bookseller, Stationer, & Printer, Charleston, S.C." FIRST OF THIS EDITION, being the first English language edition of Heinrich Himioben's "Die Schönheit der Katholischen Kirche" (1841), but substantially revised and augmented by the translator to adapt the work for use in the United States. Himioden's book was itself a heavily revised version ("almost a new work" writes Shadler, p. viii) of Gregor Rippel's "Alterhumb, Ursprung und Bedeutung aller Ceremonien, Gebräuchen und Gewohnheiten der Heil. Catholischen Kirchen" (1723). Shadler's…

Original purple cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and with gilt centerpiece on each cover. [19 cm.] Spine faded and with wear and tears at ends; corners worn. Scattered foxing and small stains, not affecting legibility. Poor to fair only. First American edition? Charleston, [S.C.]: Evans & Cogswell, 1860. 8vo [23.1 cm.] 33 pages. Original printed wraps. Library stamp on front wrap, but no other signs of institutional use. Otherwise good plus. Scattered foxing; some corners a little creased or bumped. FIRST EDITION. Scarce. Thomas Osborne Rice, a native of Brighton, Massachusetts, served as minister of the Circular Church for four years, remaining in South Carolina after secession and for much of the Civil War. Before coming to Charleston, he served as minister in West Killingly, Connecticut, and then in Boston (1858-1860). He resigned from the Circular Church in 1864 and crossed the lines to return to Massachusetts. Rice was the last minister of the old Circular Church, an architectural landmark of antebellum South Carolina. It was a great domed structure built in 1804 after the designs of Robert Mills, the esteemed Charleston architect best known for designing the original Washington Monument. The Circular Church was destroyed by a fire…

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Rev. Whitefoord Smith (1812-1893) was a Methodist minister from Charleston, and a professor of English a Wofford College. The occasion of his sermon was the national day of fasting and prayer declared by President Taylor in response to the cholera epidemic. Raleigh, N.C.: Edwards, Broughton, & Co., [1881 or 1882]. 63 pages. Ads included in pagination (pp. 59-63). Original printed wraps. 23 x 15 cm. Spine chipped and showing light evidence of glue repair, front wrap nearly detached, a number of shallow chips to wraps not affecting printed matter. A few corners creased or chipped. Fair to good only. Second edition. We have also seen the first edition of this number. The main body of the text appears to be the same in both editions, however, the second edition has some changes in layout and fewer adds. While the first edition was almost certainly printed in 1881, demand for the second edition may not have arisen until the new year. This almanac has been praised for "collecting and preserving much valuable biographical and historical data concerning the denomination." --Dictionary of N.C. Biography (entry for Bailey). In addition to the usual almanac fare, there is "A Brief Sketch of Baptist History in North Carolina," several…
