Description:
Mounting board 11 x 23 inches; photogram 8 x 20 inches. Large b&w photogram mounted on cream cardstock. Damp staining to photogram edges near center and left side; mounting board stained, damp stained, and darkened, with scraps of paper stuck to side margins and dark paint along sides of photogram -- presumably due to the image having been framed at one point.
A scarce "fern leaf motto" photogram by Anna K[uhn?] Weaver (1848-?), celebrating the American centennial and praising God for it -- and, perhaps, referring to American manifest destiny.
Weaver was a Quaker from Salem, Ohio, who used her photography work to employ numerous women as well as to fund her own missionary work in Bogata, Columbia. Although she initially created the photogram religious mottos for herself sometime in or around 1874, their unexpected success led her to found an establishment in her hometown dedicated to their production. [San Francisco]: National Woman's Party, (n. d.), circa 1939. Good. 3 x 5 inches. Small ticket printed recto only on white stock. Creasing; minor edgewear. An invitation ticket to the National Woman's Party booth in the Construction Industries Building at the GGIE. As explained here, the NWP "is a non-partisan, non-profit organization sponsoring the Equal Rights Amendment now pending before Congress: 'Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction.'" Founded by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns in 1913, the NWP was a key player in the fight for women's suffrage. After the passage of the 19th Amendment, the group put its efforts toward the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, which was written by Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman and introduced in Congress in 1923. The ERA would have guaranteed that men and women in the US have equal legal rights, but, despite nearly being ratified in 1979, it has not yet passed into law. The NWP closed its… Read More

New York: Ben Adler Advertising Service, Inc., (1958). Good. 11" x 8-1/2". 31, [1] pp. Black and white printed self-wrappers, stapled. Scuffing to front cover; two short tears to fore-edge of cover and most leaves, not affecting text. Movie tie-in booklet for "The Case of Dr. Laurent," which promoted the then-newfangled techniques of Dr. Fernand Lamaze as well as the importance of educating expectant mothers to reduce fear of childbirth. The film is set in a French mountain town and stars Nicole Courcel as an unwed mother who bucks local prejudices and accepts Dr. Laurent's (Jean Gabin) training in natural childbirth; she eventually trains the other women in the town and delivers her baby painlessly, convincing both her fellow townspeople and a skeptical medical review board of the success of the new method. In addition to a 15 pp series of captioned movie stills charting the plotline of the film, the book includes an 8 pp section of photographs showing Courcel demonstrating exercises for pregnant… Read More
