Internally, half title, [9], (x-xxv), [1], [1], 2-164 pp, [2] adverts, 1 pl (folding, B&W), damp stain to first 6 leaves including pl, text block edges uncut, modern endpapers, the first edition was published in 1811, & 1812 in the US. (191*113 mm). (see Oxford 141 & Lowndes 58 for the 1811 1st edition) Appert, a confectioner and cordial maker, began experiments aimed at preserving food in hermetically sealed containers in 1795. His success was regarded as being of strategic importance to Napoleon's armies and therefore not published until 1810. Appert opened the world's first commercial preserved food factory in 1812. He initially used glass jars and bottles, but soon changed to tin-plated metal cans.
