Description:
New York: Fritz Eichenberg, 1943. The first of 2 wood engravings of Abraham Lincoln that was created by Fritz Eichenberg. Signed in pencil by the artist for "Howie & Bobbie." I think this image is superior to the later one--it certainly is more scarce. In a 1968 letter from Lincolniana collector Frank J. Williams, Eichenberg is quoted: "I did my first Lincoln, the three quarters profile, in the middle of the second World War, to remind my friends of the great heart of Lincoln, who, in his Gettysburg address, exhorted his country to be magnanimous and bind up the wounds of a war of brother against brother.... Lincoln represents the best America has ever produced, a man of, for, and by the people in the truest sense--great and humble, with a sense of humor and deep compassion.... If you look closely, you will notice that I engraved two little crosses reflected in his sad eyes--he knew suffering.". SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Fine. Illus. by Fritz Eichenberg. Fine Art Print.

Description:
Cambridge, Massachusetts: Printed by the Riverside Press 29 pages. On November 23, 1907 the first Confederate memorial was unveiled in Vicksburg National Military Park. It honored the Botetourt Artillery, the only Virginia unit that participated in the battle of Vicksburg. The guest speaker was the Virginia novelist Mary Johnston, whose father was the second captain of the Botetourt Artillery and was wounded during the battle. This book reprints her address, which had been first published in Southern Historical Society Papers in 1907. The book offered here appears to be a reprint (uncertain date and publisher) of an edition published by Johnston's publisher (probably in 1907). The book is in almost as-new condition.. Reprint. Description:
New York: Harper's Weekly, 1862. Original printing of Homer's most sought-after Civil War wood engraving. Image: 9 1/8 inches by 13 3/4 inches; Sheet: 10 1/2 x 15 3/8 inches. This first (only) impression was printed in Harper's Weekly, November 15, 1862. Because of the development of more accurate telescopic rifles, The American Civil War saw a much greater use of sharpshooters; it is likely that Homer had occasion to see one in action during the weeks he spent sketching scenes on the battlefront. The wood engraving Homer produced was almost an exact copy of his painting of the same subject. The most notable change he made in the engraving was the inclusion of a flask hanging from a branch--something that does not appear in the painting. Both the woodblock and the electrotype plate were destroyed after the engraving was printed. This is a very good impression in very good condition. Margins slightly trimmed.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good. Illus. by Winslow Homer. Folio -…

Description:
Philadelphia: Frank Desilver, 1846. 10, 303 pages. Rebound in brown cloth sometime in the 20th century. Samuel Cooper was one of the few Northern West Point graduates who resigned to join the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Immediately appointed Brigadier General (later full general), he became Adjutant & Inspector General CSA and was the senior ranking officer in the CSA throughout the Civil War. He accompanied Jefferson Davis when he fled Richmond at the end of the war. But he also preserved the official CSA records and turned them over to Federal authorities; they became part of the Official Records published in the early 1890s. The book offered here, first published in 1936, was widely used and and revised several times prior to 1860. This "New Edition," published in 1846, included "additions and improvements." The binding is in virtually as new condition. Pages are toned and foxed, but all text is quite legible; first 15 leaves have a chip in bottom margin that is a result…

Description:
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Cowperthwait, Desilver, & Butler, 1855. xvi, 338 pages. A rare book written by the first Superintendent of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. This copy is from the library of Leonard A. Slater, a native of New Kent, Virginia and surgeon in the Confederate Army, and bears Slater's signature on both the front cover and the front free endpaper. Slater graduated from Lynchburg College in 1856, and the date October 24th 1855 as well as a Lynchburg, Va. inscription that accompany his signature suggest that he used this textbook as an undergraduate. A class schedule in ink on the rear free endpaper appears to be in Slater's handwriting. The solution to a problem written on 19th century lined blue paper tipped onto page 109 may or may not be in Slater's hand. At some point the book was professionally sympathetically rebacked with the original leather title patch retained. The book is clean and tight, with some edgewear and bumped and rubbed…

Description:
New York: The Century Co., 1884. The image is 4 5/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches on artist board measuring 14 1/2 inches by 12 1/4 inches. Original ink drawing by Walton Taber (1857-1933), after a post-battle photograph. The scene shows dead Confederate soldiers in front of Battery Robinette on October 5, 1862, the morning after the battle at Corinth, Mississippi. Civil War historians J. Matthew Gallman and Gary W. Gallagher attributed the photograph to Ohio born and Corinth based photographer George Washington Armistead . However, the Library of Congress has a virtually identical photographic negative that is attributed to Nicholas D. Brown. Although the photographer's identity remains uncertain, it is clear that the drawing is by Walton Taber and is signed by him in the lower left corner of the image. Taber did the drawing for the Century Company, who published it on page 751 of volume 2 of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. This drawing, along with others by Taber that were included in the…
