About This Item

London England: Phillimore & Co Ltd, 1982. Hardback. First Edition. Arms of Sussex Families. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. Price clippedCoats of Arms appear in a wide variety of stiuations; as crumbling carvings on masonry, on funeral hatchments, on household items such as silverware and china, on rings, seals, snuff-boxes and notepaper. Though some usages may have been illicit or improper, the great majority genuinely indicate the family, sometimes the person, for whom the building or artefact was created. Many families have left their armigerous mark on houses, chuch walls and elsewhere in Sussex. The arms of 640 families, either long connected with Sussex or to whom a grant of arms was made while living in the County, are dealt with and illustrated in this book. As the late Dr. francis Steer observes in his Foreword to the book, written shortly bedore his death, 'In this book we have a record of Sussex family history which will be of lasting value', and 'a most valuable contribution to the study of heraldry'. The appeal of the book to the student of heraldry is obvious and so its its value to the genealogist. However it also offers a great deal of relevant material to the local historian and provides an invaluable guide for the collector and architectural historian. The general reader in Sussex will also find much of interest in the work. Illustrated. 447 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.
