New York: Viking, 1940 (1940). Pictorially stamped buff cloth, small dent to rear board, no writing and no foxing; in a pictorial dust jacket with a slightly sunned spine, professional restoration to rear panel and spine ends, price clipped, no award seal. A beautiful copy of Lawson's very scarce Caldecott Medal winning book about his ancestors. The text and pictures depict black slaves in a way that is completely unacceptable by today's standards; however, his mastery as an artist should not be over-looked. The text, while very simple, still gives the reader a glimpse into American History as experienced by Lawson's family. . First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good. Illus. by Robert Lawson. 4to.
