Description:
Undated. 4 x 5 inches, in very good condition, some light fold marks, marked Personal, By Hand by the King. Royal monogram on envelope flap. King George VI (reigned 1936-1952). Sir Edward Peacock (1871-1962) was made Receiver General to the Duchy of Cornwall, which entailed dealing with the Royal finances, in 1929. For these services, he was knighted by George V in 1934. He was Receiver General until the death of George VI in 1952. Peacock was in Washington, D.C. during World War II, liaising between the United States government and the Bank of England. Just before the war, he and Montagu Norman were asked by Admiral John Henry Godfrey of Naval Intelligence to find him a personal assistant. He found and recruited Ian Fleming, who later wrote the James Bond novels.

With an original envelope, forwarded from Buckingham Palace to Harley Street (second stamp affixed, postage due charge deleted). Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers (1852 1927), Belgian painter and illustrator, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. They are sometimes referred to as Jan van Beers the elder and Jan van Beers the younger. In 1884, Jan Van Beers produced the pen-and-ink sketches for the edition de luxe of his father's poetry. he became the leader of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (18521908), Alexander Struys (18521941), and Jef Lambeaux (18521908). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behaviour, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes.

In 1856 he was appointed Flag-Lieutenant to Sir Harry Keppel in China and took a prominent part in the fighting, being present at operations in the Canton river, and at the destruction of a flotilla of war junks in Fatshan creek. For his services in China, Prince Victor was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 1 August 1857, and recommended for the Victoria Cross.
