Description:
Cyanotypes and silver prints (48) Most 5 x 7 inches, a few smaller This intriguing collection of cyanotype and platinum print photographs shows Native American life in Montana at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century. The photos were likely taken in the third Crow Agency (its present location), as there are three photographs showing Crow camps along the Little Bighorn River. There are also several photographs showing a festival or ceremony; images of travoises in use; thoughtfully-composed views of tipis; shots of US Army presence, including one photo of a man with a bandaged arm; scenic views; and interior views of an unidentified home, most likely the photographers. A captivating collection worthy of greater study. The original Crow Agency was established in 1868 and located in the western reaches of the Yellowstone River Valley, north of the Absaroka Range of Mountains. In 1875 the Agency was relocated eastward to a new site north of modern-day Absarokee, MT. In 1884 it was moved for a… Read more

Edward Ayler was born in Virginia in 1855 to enslaved parents Morgan and Matilda Ayler. After the war Ayler and his family were brought north to Portsmouth by Joseph Macomber, a Quaker. There, Morgan Ayler went from working on Macomber's farm to leasing the land to owning his own farm, which he ran with Edward. The Aylers converted to Quakerism and were active and well-regarded members of the community. After his father's death, Edward took over the farm and his high-quality produce won a number of local awards. He remained at the farm for the rest of his life, passing away in 1935. His obituary, published in the Newport Mercury, describes him as "one of the oldest and best-known citizens of Portsmouth."

William Thomas Mullarky was a Euro-American photographer from Gallup, New Mexico, who spent several decades documenting the puebloan peoples in the areas surrounding Gallup. He began his career working for the photographer Leo Hetzel, assisting in portrait work and working in the darkroom. In 1927 he established his own studio in Gallup. He was active in the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, and photographed the event prolifically in the period before its more widespread photographing by tourists. the photographs here depict Zuni, Hopi, Cachiti, Apache, Kiowa and Acoma subjects, and are all annotated on the versos. Mullarky sold his negatives along with his shop in 1960, and we find no examples of institutional holdings of his work or large groups of prints surviving, despite his prints turning up from time to time on the secondary market.
