By 1961 the Publisher knew well in advance it was going to be picked up by so many Book Clubs and had a great notion it would be on a shortlist for the Pulitzer. Because Edwin was a regular at the Atlantic Monthly and has a new novel and he had tackled a tough subject: DEATH of a loved one. This book has so many First Editions, about 20? After a True First of a First(which could be 1 of 2 of those) either the Little Brown stated First Edition or the Presentation Copy of the Little Brown stated First Edition(I may still have one). I have one that someone pushed off as a 1st by trying to hide the square on the back by loosening the cloth around it. These others can be just as nice, so pick a nice-looking one and don't fret about this winner. You can usually get a real one of 2 for cheap but they tend to be battered or have No DJ, with sun-faded spines and top edges, so condition is the question here. The dustjacket has the same wear as the book it matches it exactly making this a variant because it is a 1st Ed DJ but on a BCE(indent on rear cover near the spine) so it is a First Edition Stated cross of the two. Printers have been known to use left over DJ on next(continuous) run. This book had several printers for the BCE but only one true 1st ed. Making this one of the 1st BCE(variant). There were believed to have been 1 million book club editions and they came with markings of the printer or no marking..You can see a "W" that is one of those all stated "First Edition" , there a 2nd, 3rd and so on from the 1st ED printing. This variant could also be ID as 1st Trade Ed.

THERE IS NO LITTLE INDENTURE ON THE BACK COVER BOTTOM SPINE AREA. Stated First Edition, price-clipped but TEOS is still there(for those that don't know that is the 1st letter of each word of the title). Gray cloth with gold lettering and I added a grayish-black bar across the top to hide a faded area that looked like sunshine, and it does not look professional but is better. The spine ends are bruised but not bumped. There is a small smudge on the bottom page ends. Otherwise, there is not a mark or stain, very tight and square. The Dustjacket has very minor chipping on the spine ends and light shelf wear along the edges. Now in Brodart for protection. It is hard to find a decent copy of this book that is not a Book Club with its minor blemishes it had to be saved.

GREY CLOTH WITH GOLD LETTERING. first edition but it is Book Club, but makes a nice Gap Filler. previous owners name in ink 1st leaf, book has minor fade to edges. DJ has minor fade to spine and rubbing shelf wear. It is a nice GAP FILLER till you can find that $350 1st.

PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTS FOR ISSUE POINTS. No INDENT BOTTOM OF THE REAR COVER(USUALLY A SMALL SQUARE). STATED FIRST EDITION(some confusion here as the Book Clubs Also have stated First Edition, look for the indent rear cover). Look for a price on the inside front flap top right corner(If price cut make sure no mention of book club-especially rear flap, they may cut the front flaps but for get the rear flaps).
Most copies have fade to the gray cloth(almost all of them 99%) less fade the better. The Dustjacket is the most acceptable to damage really cheaply made and hard to maintain, Finding one with little or no rubbing, and edgewear is the key.
This copy has very minor defects. not perfect but in 45 years have yet to find one. Because of limited defects it falls into a collector's grade. tHIS IS THE LESSER OF THE TWO i HAVE.

SEE THE PHOTOS of this authors 1st novel. ex-library but very well kept or not checked out often. He was not known as a writer with two different University programs under his belt.
