A twentieth century illustrated edition of Vathek, reproducing the text of the English-language version of 1786, with about half of the original explanatory notes. The beautiful illustrations are by Violet Dale, a British book illustrator frequently used by the Philip Allan publishing firm, thought she is not named or credited in this edition. The same year as its publication in Boston with a new preface by Stowe written for the European edition - "No Nation Can Remain Free With Whom Freedom Is A Privilege and Not A Principle."A prior owner's name written neatly in front but otherwise an antiquarian book in Excellent condition with very light foxing affecting a few pages.

About the book: Between Parentheses collects most of the newspaper columns and articles Bolaño wrote during the last five years of his life, as well as the texts of some of his speeches and talks and a few scattered prologues. "Taken together," as the editor Ignacio Echevarria remarks in his introduction, they provide "a personal cartography of the writer: the closest thing, among all his writings, to a kind of fragmented 'autobiography.'"

Condition: The cover boards in cloth and paper are a little worn with some signs of staining. The drawing and magazines inside are in very good condition, with one or two loose caption pages.
About the item: Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish etcher and watercolorist who became known for his depiction of industrial and architectural subjects and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. Originally, these drawings were issued in 10 parts. Volume 1 contains the original 5 parts, in their original covers and crisp clean dustwrappers. Volume 2 contains part 1 in it's original case and dustwrapper, and the rest of the sheets are loose.

Condition: near fine - a particularly well-preserved vintage novel tight, bright, clean and strong. There is a prior gift inscription on the front endpaper (please see photos). About the book: The novel tells the story of Porgy, a crippled street beggar living in the black tenements of Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1920s. The character was based on Charlestonian Samuel Smalls. In some of the novel's passages, black characters speak in Gullah, a creole language that had developed among enslaved African Americans during the slavery years on the Sea Islands.The novel was adapted for a 1927 play of the same name by Heyward and his wife, playwright Dorothy Heyward. Even before completing the play, Heyward was in discussions with composer George Gershwin for an operatic version of his novel. This was produced in 1935 as Porgy and Bess.

All edges gilded. 477 pp. This edition, with the intricate John Batten illustrations, was first published by Dent in 1893. This may be the first American edition of it, in very good condition. There's a bookplate and xmas gift inscription dated 1907 at the front. The gilt titles on the spine are darkened and faded. There are small check marks in pencil alongside the contents at the front, otherwise unmarked.
