A book that is written like a love letter for a small coastal town. The peaceful and pristine California of the '20's. A beautiful description of the town that has tried its best to stay true to the image of early California. 14 sketches and 36 photos. Description:
12mo, 5.0x7.35, brown boards black lettering, see photos. Book has been rebound with new endpapers but original boards. Very clean and tight copy.Title page and front drawing are very good. 312pp. Dating this edition is problematic. The first Uncle Remus book was written in 1881. In the Introduction, Harris writes this book was written three years latter. "Nights" was released by Houghton in 1883 in the US and in 1884 in London by Routledge and Sons. The Houghton edition had green decorative boards and the Routledge edition had blue decorative boards.Another (later?) printing of the Routledge book had brown boards. There was another London edition by Chato and Windus, the first of which was in 1911 with subsequent editions.prior to 1930. This brown board copy has no date visible. I have seen it listed by other dealers as a first edition with an 1884 date. ,This a lovely copy.of a book that was heralded when released. You could make a collection of just the variety of editions of this book.
