Description:
Illus. by Jozef Wilkon. Translated into English by Anthea Bell. A wonderful story in which the circus owner would not let the animals perform acts that they wanted to do, not the silly, repetitive acts they had had to do for many years. The clown wanted to tell stories; the donkey was tired of pretending to be stubborn. So they turned and marched out of the ring. Ferdinand the dancing pony did the same thing; Louise the Giraffe, Gus the Lion, and Otto the dog didn't even came into the ring. The six rebels packed up their belongings and left the circus that very night. They would find a place to have their own circus. They could do things that they wanted to do, and they did, much to the delight of the families in that town.

Description:
Illustrations by Barry Jones. Paper engineering by David Hawcock. "One terrible day, men with bulldozers arrived in Farthing Wood. They tore down trees and filled in the pond. The frightened animals watched as their homes were destroyed. They would have to leave the Wood, but where could they go? Fox, their leader, had a plan. Fox agreed to lead the animals to White Deer Park, a nature reserve. They would be safe there, but it was far away. Suddenly a car sped past. Out through the window came a cigarette. It flickered in the dry grass. Suddenly, the field was alight and the fire was burning fast. 'Quickly! Across the water everyone, It's our only chance.' Soon all the animals were swimming for their lives. They reached the far side. But now there was a new danger--hunters! Fox's friend Vixen was trapped. But Adder darted forward and bit deep into the horse's leg. As the horse reared in fright, Vixen made her escape. Now there was one final hurdle to face--the motorway. 1st Canadian Edition (printed and bound in Canada, on the copyright page). Some wear on corners and bottom edges; a crease present on pages 3 to 15, possibly during the binding of the book (very doubtful if the pages were torn and then repaired because the text on these pages is too perfect). Still a Very Good copy in a Poor jacket with some chipping and repairs and discolouration. And still, it's nice to have the d.j. even in this condition. A perennial favourite.

Description:
From the d.j.: "The District of North Vanvouver celebrates its Centennial in 1991, marking 100 years of progress. This picture-filled book is part of that exciting and important celebration. You'll meet a wide and often colourful cast of characters in this book: lumber barons Sewell Moody and Robert dollar, the venerable August Jack Khahtsahlano, adventurous Joe Capilano, the "Heroine of Moodyville", Charles Tisdall (the no-nonsense Commissioner), author Ridyard Kipling, 102-year-old pioneer Walter Draycott, war hero Eddie Nahanee, world figure skating champion Karen Magnussen, megastar Bryan Adams and a host of others. This book is a visual reflection of the way we were, as we worked and played, survived the Depression, went to school, built bridges and factories, went off to war, and developed with the times. Many of the photographs have never been seen in print."
Inscribed on the front endpaper by incoming Mayor J. Murray Dykeman.

Description:
From the d.j.: "Forever Christmas is a celebration of a joyous holiday and of one inspired artist's preparation for, and exaltation of, the day. That artist is Tasha Tudor, so readers know in advance how unique the advent and Christmas activities will be. The tree, decked with ornaments of the past and the present, is lit with real candles. Christmas has arrived, and it is honored with gusto and sentiment. Even after the celebration is over, another treat is in store, a wintry sleigh ride.
Gorgeously illustrated with photographs by Jay Paul and illustrations from many of Tasha Tudor's books, 'Forever Christmas' is a book to be read, cherished, and read again. It sings a special seasonal song of joy and of the inspiration of a unique artist--Tasha Tudor."

Description:
From the front endpaper: "Day's commentary, woven around the complete text of the novel for ease of cross-reference on every page, uncovers the many layers of teaching, concealed by manipulation of language, that are carried so lightly in the form of a fairy tale. These layers relate directly to Carroll's interest in philosophy, history, mathematics, classics, poetry, spiritualism and even to his love of music. Many of the characters in the book were based on real-life contemporaries of Carroll's. Day identifies them all, and in doing so demonstrates that 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is also a veritable Who's Who of Oxford at the height of its power and influence in the Victorian Age. Carroll's novel is a memory palace, given to Alice as the great gift of an education. It was delivered in coded form because, in that age, it was a gift no girl would be permitted to receive in any other way."

Description:
From the back of the d.j.: "The impulse to write this study of Edward FirzGerald sprang from a fortuitous fellow-feeling for the man who seemed to haunt, with fastidious delicacy, the house which Peter de Polnay had rented. Soon after settling into Boulge Hall, Woodbridge, the urge came upon him to know more of the eccentric recluse who had chosen never to stir far away from the precincts of his early home and whose name, only after his death, became a household word through the universal enthusiasm for his translation of The Ruba, iyat of Omar Khayyam, and through the publication of his Letters to his many literary friends.
The author made a careful study of the FitzGerald papers in Trinity College Library, Cambridge, searched for and found much new material in Woodbridge and Ipswich, and has been permitted to publish for the first time two intimate EFG letters from a private source. Permission has also been granted for the inclusion in this book of a hitherto unknown and very little portrait study of… Read More
