Description:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1928. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19.5 × 13cm, 264pp. The author's last collection of stories, published just after his death. From the wrapper "These stories will bring to all a grievously sharp sense of the loss English letters have suffered in the death of their author. They are stories of heroic people, of quiet heroes and simple heroes, the sort of people who see things through and do not make a fuss about it, the people Montague knew and respected better perhaps than any author now writing. The first story, Action, a mountaineering story, is an epitome of the book and appropriately gives it its title. But they are not all stories of one scene. There are tales of rowing on the Thames, of the War, of tramps and of London life. In all there is Montague's vivid command of word, his humour, his wit, and his courage." Condition: Very good condition. The wrapper is a little… Read More

Description:
Lewes: The Book Guild, 2004. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16.5cm, 132pp. Signed and dedicated by Oliver Eade to the ffep. Edward Eade was part of the remarkable generation of British artists who reached the public gaze during the 1930's. Trained at the Slade School of Art and later at the Royal Academy Schools, Eade was a painter whose sensitive use of colour was grounded in his superb skill at drawing. After the Second World War he turned to sculpture, studying for a time with Henry Moore. Edward Eade's work remains completely unknown because it was never exhibited during his lifetime. The author of this monograph, the artist's son Oliver, puts this down to his father's "very profound lack of self-confidence," a quality which seems not to have affected the range and ambition of Edward Eade's artistic output. The Gentle Artist includes more than 80 mostly colour examples of Eade's… Read More

Description:
Boston: Brill Academic Publishers, 2002. Reprint. . Soft cover. Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. 23 × 15cm, xxiii + 517pp. Do we really know who wrote the New Testament documents? Do we really know when they were written? Scholars have long debated these fundamental questions. This volume identifies and investigates literary traditions and their implications for the authorship and dating of the Gospels and the letters of the New Testament. Departing from past scholarship, E. Earle Ellis argues that the Gospels and the letters are products of the corporate authorship of four allied apostolic missions and not just the creation of individual authors. The analysis of literary traditions also has implications for the dating of New Testament documents. Providing a critique of the current critical orthodoxy with respect to the dating of New Testament documents, Ellis weighs the patristic traditions more heavily and more critically than has been done in the past. Ellis's new reconstruction of the… Read More

Description:
London: Europa Publications Limited, 1980. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24.5 × 16cm, 381pp. "The essays in this book examine some aspects of the history of crime and law in selected areas and periods in western Europe since 1500. They have in common a critical interest in three fundamental questions which face any student of this rapidly growing subject. How reliable and comprehensive are the records of crime upon which the historian must depend? What was the variable social meaning of the acts labelled as crimes by law-makers and enforcers? And how have changes in crime and the legal penalties attached to it reflect long-term social and economic change? Each essay is self-contained, but also illustrates the diverse methods by which, in the cases with which they are concerned, these questions may begin to be answered. The book begins and concludes with seminal studies in which the editors seek to focus the diverse themes… Read More

Description:
London : Newman Communications, 1980. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/Good. First edition. Paperback in wrapper. 24.5 × 18cm, 206pp. "Why is British architecture so lousy?" is a fictional quotation, but the charge it makes is certainly real. In a country whose architectural heritage is as great as anywhere in the world, typical public relations to Britain's contemporary architecture dwell on its mediocrity, insensitivity, cost and sameness. Clearly Britain has an architecture where self-congratulation is normal among the makers, but discontent widespread among the ungrateful users. To face the uncomfortable implications of this book's title, some of those centrally concerned with architecture express themselves - often, but not always, in agreement. An introduction by architecture school head Nathan Silver poses the question and suggests places to look for answers. In four sections (because of the architects / because of the planners / because of the press / because of… Read More
