Description:
A group of 15 black-and-white photographs of gaming tables produced by Mason & Co., which at one time was the nation's largest producer of gambling equipment. Several of these 8" x 10" images are stamped with a Newark, New Jersey address on the verso, dating the images to pre-1935 when the company consolidated its operations and moved them to Chicago. The company was founded in the late 1800s as Geo. Mason & Co. and initially produced ornate roulette wheels. According to a handwritten note on the back of one of the photographs, the images in this group show the new standard carved library equipment. There are a variety of mahogany tables for playing roulette and craps. One of the images in the group has been mocked up to show it in a residential setting, perhaps for a catalog. Along with the photographs, this group includes four brochures about gambling: Harrah's Club Lake Tahoe Gaming Guide, 1955; Roland Hill's In Las Vegas I Recommend: Where to Go, Stop, Eat, Play and Shop, 1950; Joe W. Brown's…

Includes profiles of the state presidents, county histories, and department reports, as well as a brief chapter on women's suffrage: "The campaign of 1911 brought us victory, and the women of California took their places by the side of the men as political equals. We went to the polls and voted with a new dignity, and we were not contaminated either by this close proximity to the male voter. The cooperative spirit of all the organizations working together to win this amendment was wonderful. The W.C.T.U. was an important factor because so thoroughly organized." Profusely illustrated. Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First American Edition. Signed and dated by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the title page. Fictionalized account of the last seven months of Simon Bolivar, liberator and leader of Gran Colombia. The book traces Bolivar's final journey from Bogota to the Caribbean coastline of Colombia in his attempt to leave South America for exile in Europe. Breaking with the traditional heroic portrayal of Bolivar El Libertador, Garcia Marquez (1927-2014) depicts a pathetic protagonist, a prematurely aged man who is physically ill and mentally exhausted. The story explores the labyrinth of Bolivar's life through the narrative of his memories, in which "despair, sickness, and death inevitably win out over love, health, and life." Translated from the Spanish by Edith Grossman. Octavo. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
