Among the physicians interested in biology were Asahel Clapp, Rufus Haymond, Alembert W. Brayton, and Marcus Ward Lyon, Jr. Among those interested in geology were Ryland T. Brown, William T. S. Louisville: The Filson Club Book. Good. Soft cover. pp123-145. Removed from FILSON CLUB HISTORY QUARTERLY, Vol 71, No. 2, April, 1997. In report covers. VG. May include a first or last copied page. In May of 1884, Richard Reid, age 46, judge of the Kentucky Superior Court and candidate for Court of Appeals shot himself. What led to his suicide was a complicated affair involving an assault against him by a fellow member of the bar, John J. Cornelison. Cornelison had attacked Reid with a cane and a whip. The so called code of honor in those days demanded that the aggrieved party had the right, actually the obligation, to defend himself to the death, or if unable to do so, at the earliest possible moment to seek out the attacker and attempt to kill him. Whipping was considered an especially degrading form of attack, it having been used in the punishment of slaves. Reid's refusal to seek vengeance caused a great deal of controversy, pro and con. Although the Reid-Cornelison affair did not signal the…

Lexington: The University Press of Kentucky Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. (1972), x, 194pp, index, illustrated. VG+ in VG+ dj. The county courts in early nineteenth century Kentucky were closer to the people than any other governmental institution; their powers and responsibilities touched the daily lives of almost every inhabitant. The author describes the activities of the courts in such matters as overseeing the administration of estates, the guardianship of orphans, and relations between masters and apprentices, as well as tax collecting, roadbuilding, and the construction of ferries and mill dams. The courts had become, in effect, self perpetuating oligarchies, a situation which continued until the Constitutional Convention of 1849..

May include a first or last copied page. Synopsis: "Historians have neglected the unwritten law of the nineteenth century United States that forgave an outraged husband who killed the man who had debauched his wife. Such inattention is especially true of the Thompson-Davis tragedy which occurred in Cincinnati and Harrodsburg in 1882 and 1883. This case demands greater examination not only because it illuminates the unwritten law, but also because it attained great notoriety and controversy.".

Louisville.: The Filson Club Book. Very Good. Soft cover. pp366-389, two photos. Removed from THE FILSON CLUB HISTORY QUARTERLY, Vol 69, No. 4, October, 1995. VG in report covers. Articles from this publication may include a first or last copied page. In the 1870's a very heated controversy arose between Thomas F. Hargis and Thomas M. Green. Hargis had run for circuit judge, but had been charged with tampering with the Rowan County judicial records. Green was the editor and publisher of the Maysville Eagle. The situation took on a life of its own, simmering for years, finally evolving into a four month long trial, involving teams of lawyers for each side, and described as "the most celebrated case ever tried in the annals of Kentucky" representing "the first time in the history of Kentucky that a judge of the supreme court has ever been made a party to any suit involving his fitness for the bench or his character as a judge.".

May include a first or last copied page. From the article: "Even though county government may well have been the most influential part of the American constitution before the Civil War, historians of the United States have for the most part neglected the subject in their administrative, political and constitutional studies. There is thus a need for a thorough exploration of the political realities of county government and its relationship with the other agencies of local and state constitutions during the ante-bellum period. The nullification crisis in Franklin County, Kentucky occurring in the years 1845 and 1846 and certain episodes which preceded it afford an excellent opportunity to accomplish these goals.".

May include a first or last copied page. VG. From the introduction:"Washington Irving's experiences were not confined to the banks of the Hudson, the ruins of the Alhambra and the rural scenes of English life, but were extended to embrace the far western region of his own country, a region at that time still the domain of savage nature. In 1832, the year embraced in his TOUR ON THE PRAIRIES, the buffalo, or bison, now recovering from near extinction, roamed in vast herds over the treeless plains, and wild horses were little less abundant in the same broad region. The work in question is principally devoted to incidents of a hunter's life in pursuit of these two animals. The scene lies in the vicinity of the upper waters of the Red River." .
