Clarksville, Tennessee: Letter written by Julian J., 1830., 1830. First edition. A fascinating 4-page letter written and sent from Tennessee in 1830. A very interesting letter giving a detailed report of people he knew in Pittsburgh and then going on to reference stops he made in Huntington, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Cincinnati, and Louisville Falls. He travels partly by steamboat except where the water is too shallow where he travels by gig. In Pittsburgh he mentions going riding and seeing where General Braddock was killed. In Ohio he travels on the "National Turnpike" where he can cover a distance of 8 miles per hour with "the Greatest of ease to the horses" on a delightful road "as smooth as a floor." In Cincinnati he writes that this is the farthest west he has ever been and finds "every house has a green yard before it and the house being all new gives it such a neat appearance ..." Moon of Morrisville, PA, and is written and signed in ink and they are ordering some "S Plants" and asking for the cost for a quantity of Tuberose bulbs. Very good copy.

The author's family left England to join the Peters Colony in Texas. They arrived in 1848, when the author was 10 years old, and he remained in Dallas until his death in 1912. His mother and father were among the first settlers in Peters' Colony which extended from a point on the Red River to a point 100 miles south near Waxahachie and it included all of Dallas County. Peter Ellis Bean, 1783-1846, and his role in Mexico's revolution against Spain and his service as an agent of the Mexican government, especially as an Indian agent in eastern Texas, provide an unusually vivid picture of Mexican Texas, as well as new information about the Indians in the region. Bean's career as an Indian agent shows Sam Houston as a rival for the loyalty of the Indians during Texas' rebellion against Mexico, a rival who made false promises for military and political gain. After Texas gained its independence, Bean acquired vast lands in Texas and was a good citizen and businessman. As new, unread copy in dust jacket.

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was one of the most prolific (and maybe the most famous) of Western photographers. During his lengthy career, Jackson photographed numerous views of the West between Nebraska and California, from cliff dwellings to industrial urban centers. A small crease to the lower right corner, else an interesting photograph with nice contrasts.
