Edgewear, creasing and light scratches to covers. Page block slightly curved. Page block edges browned/foxed, light foxing to early/rear pages. Text is mostly clean and free from foxing, though there is some staining outside of the text border to some pages. Text is free from annotation or other such markings. Amsterdam.: JH Kruyt, 1892. 1st Edition. hardcover. fair. Hardcover. First Edition. Text in Afrikaans. Binding is in the original half cloth with publisher's paper covered boards and spine. All six lithograph plates present (one being a fold out map of the Transvaal), and are placed between their correct pages as per instruction to the original binder, as well as portrait of Paul Kruger opposite the title page. Early inserted pages have some open scores across them. Front board is separated from the rest of the book, and spine is separating and coming up, o/wise contents clean and good condition. Very scarce and not to be confused with the second edition which was printed a year later by a different publisher. Colour pencil writing on front paste-down. Also includes two additional works by Johnston: a fine copy of Johnston's chaplet 'Aversion', of which 750 copies were published by Backwoods Broadsides in 2001 (number 61 of their chaplet series); and a copy of his poem 'Cat' in its original sealed envelope (which is has minor wear and staining but presumably protecting the poem within) of which 200 copies were published in 2002 by The Cultural Society (Miniside no 3) and 25 of which were signed and lettered by Johnston, including this copy which is lettered 'L'.
