Description:
St. Louis, 1969. Very good.. [1],105,[8]pp. Printed on rectos only. Folio. Original blue card covers, spiral bound. Minor wear, slightly heavier to covers. Academic work written by Joseph A. Kahl, who was, at the time, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Washington University, specializing in Latin America. Kahl (1923-2010) subsequently moved to Cornell, where he taught until his retirement in 1983. He authored numerous works on the social and class struggles of Latin America. The present work appears to be unpublished, perhaps printed in a small number for distribution among friends and colleagues. A printed note at the top of the first page reads "Private Document: Not to Be Quoted." In his introductory remarks, Kahl states the purpose of his visit: "For over a year I have wanted to go simply because the Cuban experiment is so important in the context of the future of Latin America. ... My curiosity was heightened by memories of a trip I made to the Soviet Union in 1959. I wondered if Cuban… Read More

Description:
Hutchinson, Ks: The Hutchinson Gazette, 1920. Very good plus.. 32pp. Quarto. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Slight wear along spine. Minor dust soiling and toning. Scarce, post-World War I promotional for Southwest Kansas and the town of Hutchinson, the seat of Reno County. This substantial, magazine-style publication prints enthusiastic endorsements of agriculture, stock raising, and industry in the region, with numerous photographs of farms, factories, and local buildings. Another major point of emphasis is the salt business, for which the town is still known. The second half of this work is an extensive description and advertisement for its publisher, the Hutchinson Gazette. The trumpeting of enormous crop and food production and celebration of newfound land fertility, in retrospect, is a somewhat grim harbinger of the Dust Bowl: "The land of sage brush and prairie dogs, grass hoppers, wire grass and buffalo has become an oasis of wealth and a land of miracles. Miracles because, in this… Read More

Description:
[Greenwood, Ks, 1856. Very good.. Broadside, approximately 12 x 7.75 inches. Previously folded. Minor wear. Slight discoloration at center of sheet. A scarce, early Kansas imprint, comprising a certificate of stock ownership in the Woodson Town Association. The group was formed in Greenwood, the seat of Greenwood County, which neighbors Woodson County, the presumable site of Woodson town, though there is no evidence that such a settlement was ever founded. The broadside states that, "Each share will be entitled to an equal division of Land and Oats, or the proceeds thereof, and subject to an equal proportion of the expenses and liabilities incurred, and to be governed by the present Rules and By-Laws of said Association, and that may hereafter be adopted." This example was completed in manuscript for one John H. Swift on May 5, 1856, and signed by Henry Addams and W.S. Brewster, the president and secretary of the organization respectively. We locate only two copies, at Yale and Princeton.

Description:
Leavenworth: Hathaway & Smith, 1860. Good.. Broadside, 11.5 x 8 inches. Some wear and chipping at edges, some loss at lower edge, a few small tears. Two small tape repairs on verso. Minor foxing. Apparently unrecorded and ephemeral broadside claiming to be a newspaper, but just as probably a strange advertisement for Thompson's Prescription and Family Medicine Store in Leavenworth. The masthead says that the paper is "Published Frequently" by Robert Bonnett and C.J. Benner for the price of two bits a year. "The principal grip of this paper is Quack Nostrums. In Politics we are in for the side that pays most money. Railroad matters will be fluently discussed, and Free Passes will be expected in return for said discussions. The editor proposes to deliver Lyceum Lectures through this State, for the benefit of woman's rights, -- subject, "Quack Nostrums and Coal Oil." Fully half the paper is an ad for Thompson's, however, advertising "Non-Quack Nostrum Coal Oil" and other similarly snarky items.

Fort Riley, Ks: Sixteenth Infantry Print, 1879. Very good plus.. Broadsheet, printed on thin coated paper, approximately 14 x 6.5 inches, recto printed in blue ink with ornamental border enclosing the title portion and decorative ornament on other panel of recto, verso printed in black, with signature line at bottom filled in by the adjutant. Light foxing, three horizontal folds, short separation along central horizontal fold. A handsome example of garrison printing in Kansas, listing the thirty-six commissioned officers of the 16th Infantry Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas, under the command of Brevet General Galusha Pennypacker. The 16th was headquartered at Fort Riley beginning in 1877, following a decade's peacekeeping service in the Reconstruction-era South. The regiment's sojourn to Kansas was relatively brief, as it was ordered to Texas in 1880. Still later, in 1890, following the Department of the Platte, several companies of the 16th participated in the Wounded Knee campaign. The decorative… Read More

[Oxford, Ks.], 1914. Very good.. [75]pp. Pocket diary, 5.5 x 2.5 inches. Leather covers, gilt. Minor wear, one leaf loosening, contents clean. Petite manuscript volume recording a year in the life of a young Kansas teacher. Goldie Hahn (1892-1976) was a native of Oxford, Kansas, living with her parents and brother while she worked at the local school. She married local boy George Prater (1892-1977) in 1917, and the couple seem to have remained in Kansas. The entries are brief, usually a sentence or snippet for each day, noting the highlights of an active social life. Much of the winter is spent skating, sleigh riding, or at social events such as choir practice or dances. Skating gives way to riding and ball games as the weather warms. George and his family appear throughout, and she often goes riding or to church with him. An entry from February 10th reads: "All night at Praters. Boys put things in our bed. Averaged grades." Though she spends a lot of time with George, an entry from September 12… Read More

Light wear and chipping to upper corner of title page, otherwise clean internally. An odd promotional work for the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, printed in Kansas. In addition to exteriors, there are interior views of the hotel and several other businesses. Several pages are devoted to industry in the area. Minor toning, partial separations at folds, otherwise minor wear. A grouping of retained correspondence and a large promotional map relating to Kansas real estate speculation during and just after the Civil War. The letters were written to Jeffrey Sage (1791-1876) and his son William N. Sage (born 1828) of Broome County, New York and Virginia, who had invested in land in Nemaha County in northeastern Kansas, apparently in the now-defunct village of Albany just north of Sabetha. These letters from their agents and friends in Kansas offer some interesting details on frontier conditions there during the Civil War era. John L. Graham writes on January 6, 1861: "Miller is out on the Republican Fork of the Kansas River, hunting and trapping.... [Baldwin, Ks, 1926. Very good.. Five items, either manuscript or typed, totaling approximately [35]pp. Occasional browning, soil and edgewear, but in generally good or better, legible condition; one item possibly incomplete. Small but notable collection of papers relating to Arthur Bridwell (ca. 1874-1966), newspaperman, professional photographer, amateur naturalist and prominent socialist of Baldwin City, Kansas. Though born in Indiana, Bridwell appears to have spent nearly his entire life in Baldwin City, and graduated from Baker University around 1900. In the first decade of the 20th century his by-line appears on several articles in the Baldwin Republican, but by 1906 he is advertising his services as a photographer of views and portraits. Though apparently never elected, Baldwin was a sometime candidate for statewide political office on the Socialist ticket, running once for the state legislature (1916) and twice for state auditor (1922 and 1924). Topeka, Ks: S.G. Watkins, 1905. Very good.. 15pp. Original printed blue wrappers. Moderate soiling and wear to wrappers. A rare pamphlet designed to foster "an earnest desire to increase interest in the work and knowledge of the Order of Eastern Star." The work was published by and for the Eastern Stars in Topeka, Kansas, and contains instructions for conducting the "Labyrinth," an organization ceremony. The Order of Eastern Star was established in 1850 as an adjunct body to the Freemasons, open to both men and women. The organization's activities were based on the teachings of the Bible, but open to people of all religious beliefs, and regardless of race, though African Americans established a separate organization called the Prince Hall Order of the Eastern Star. The publisher of the present work, S.G. Watkins was the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Colored Masons in Kansas around the turn of the 20th century, so this publication may relate to the Price Hall Eastern Star Order. A voluminous archive of letters, documents, photographs and more documenting various aspects of an extended family in the Middle West, concentrated in Kentucky, Missouri, and Kansas. The family includes members with various surnames, most prominently the Wilson, Price, Nelson, and Mason families. Much of the correspondence from the 19th century centers around Robert G. Anamosa, Ia, 1891. Good.. 26pp. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers worn, spine and edges chipped, soiled. Contents with some wear and soiling, moderate at times. Illustrated catalogue for the mail-order elevator company of Kimball Brothers in Anamosa, Iowa. The company was founded in 1883 when a local grocer wanted an easier way to get potatoes to his basement. The company moved its operations to Council Bluffs in 1892. This catalogue, then, is a relatively early piece for the Iowa elevator maker. It has around a dozen illustrations showing various lifts, pulleys, dumbwaiters, and other relevant features. Interestingly, in the introductory material, the manufacturers note: "All machines are put together and tested before leaving us, thereby making them so complete that any man, even though inexperiences in elevators, can set them up with little expense. As we seldom send our men a great distance for such purposes, we send full particulars for erecting." No copies in OCLC.
