Brisbane: Locks' Press, 1983. Ryder, Mona. Small quarto. 9ff., + 11 plates mounted on stubs, 3 of which are folding. One of thirty copies. Illustrated with thirteen etchings by Mona Ryder, a sculptor-turned-printmaker, who studied with Margaret Lock. In keeping with the Locks' ambition to rescue "unjustly neglected" texts, this book revives what is likely the best-known work from a relatively obscure 7th-century BCE poet, in a translation by Joseph Addison. The satiric poem presents an origin story for women, and catalogues ten "types" using comparisons to animals. The Locks operated their press in Brisbane, Australia until 1987, when they relocated to Canada. This is a fine copy in black cloth featuring a lithographed design by Ryder.

Printed in an assortment of display type and Bookman linotype, in order to "present the true story of a heroic woman in an appropriate context." Bound in full blue cloth over boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine. (2 7/8 by 2 1/4; 75x61mm).

(Bologna: Caligola Bazalieri, 1501. Quarto. (94)ff. This edition is based on the version published by Caligola Bazalieri's brother, Bazaliero Bazalieri, in July 1491. The text is Ovid's Heroides, a collection of imaginary letters written from ancient mythological heroines to the lovers who abandoned or mistreated them, including Penelope, Dido, Ariadne, Phaedra, Medea, and Sappho. Printed in Roman type, with wood-engraved initials. Caligola Bazalieri began his career as a printer by working at his brother's press, and he printed his own title in 1492. It is rare to come across any of Caligola Bazalieri's editions: seventeen of the forty-two books that he published are known only as single copies or are "ghost" volumes, only known through bibliographies.
