Description:
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1924. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This four-page letter is from Dr. D. R. Jacobs at the Pittsburgh Municipal Hospital to Nancy Throckmorton at Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. It is datelined "Municipal Hospital / Sept - 16 - 1924". It is enclosed in its original mailing envelope which was franked with a red 2-cent Washington stamp (Scott #634) and canceled with a Pittsburg machine postmark. There is a bold "DISINFECTED" handstamp (Sandrick Pittsburgh Type 2) of which there is only one other known extant example. Dr. Jacobs letter reads, in part, as follows: "Have been here for nine days with diphtheria, a nice thing for a doctor to get. I expect to be here a few days yet. . .. I only worked here for one week before getting sick, during which time I saw several cases of smallpox, chicken pox, scarlet fever, Dephtheria and mumps." . Prisoner of War Enclosure Number 1, St. Pierre des Corps, France via APO 717], 1919. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This partially-printed legal-size envelope from Remki was sent from Prisoner of War Enclosure Number 1 (PWE #1) at St. Pierre des Corps, France which was controlled by the A.E.F.'s Prisoners of War Company No. 1."Prisoner of War Letter" is printed along the top edge of the envelope. Although it bears no postmark, official A.E.F. documents report that PWE #1 was located at St. Pierre des Corps, and its mail was processed via Army Post Office (APO) 717 at Tours, France. A standard violet censor stamp is in the lower left-hand corner and a German "Gepruft / Uberwachungsstelle" (Censored / Monitoring Agency) handstamp in the upper right corner.
A partially printed message on the reverse reads, "From (Serial) No. 7162 Name Remki Franz / Prisoner of War Company No. 1 in France, care of the / Prisoner of War Information Bureau A. G. O. American E. F. / H"

This letter from R. (Reuben) D. Reid, son of Governor David S. Reed, to his mother who was managing the family hotel in Reidsville is datelined "Chapel Hill N.C. / Sept 25th 1878". No envelope. In nice shape.
In his letter Ruben reports:
"It seems that our Baptist brother, Prof. Redd is getting to be quite a fighting character. He had a fight with Prof Graves about an air pump and Prof Winston made some remark about Redd whereupon he challenged Winston for a duel, he did not accept, consequently I anticipate no further difficulty. . .."
Rueben also notes in his letter that
"My room mate . . . left last week, he was a good boy and I was sorry to see him leave. I am rooming by myself now and find that I am forced to study to keep from getting homesick. . .. I was glad to hear from Father's last letter that Mr. Patterson was going to take charge of the hotel. I imagine it will be good company for you. . .. New Orleans, 1807.
This 1807 two-page stampless folded letter, measuring 16" x 11¾" unfolded, was sent by Dr. Robert Dow, a long-time Scottish immigrant, living in New Orleans, Louisiana Territory, to John Watkinson at Middletown Connecticut. The letter was carried to New York as indicated by the annotation, "favored by Mr. Barnard" where it was placed into the mail system. It bears a circular 22 August New York postmark in red and manuscript rate marking, "12½", which at the time was the cost to send a letter between 90 and 150 miles.
In this letter, Dow expresses both admiration for the Louisiana Purchase as well as concern about potential international complications.

This three-page stampless letter measures 15½" x 12½" unfolded. It was sent by Henry Root Colman to his brother-in-law, Richard P. Speir, who had recently settled in New Orleans. It is datelined "Duck Creek June 17th 1843" and bares a manuscript postmark reading "Duck Creek / W.T. June 19" and a "25" rate mark.
In this letter, Colman explained,
"An Indian Missionary does not see much of the world or have the privilege of sharing very largely in the blessings of civilized life. But all this we expected before we came here. We have been and are still endeavoring to labor for the good of the Indians. We have had some success among them but have not as yet seen any general outpouring of the spirit in the awakening and conversion of souls. Fain, the postmaster of Santaluca [Santa Luca] in Gilmer County. It is datelined "Macon, Feby 10. 1854".
