New York: The Century Co., 1884. The image is 4 5/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches on artist board measuring 14 1/2 inches by 12 1/4 inches. Original ink drawing by Walton Taber (1857-1933), after a post-battle photograph. The scene shows dead Confederate soldiers in front of Battery Robinette on October 5, 1862, the morning after the battle at Corinth, Mississippi. Civil War historians J. Matthew Gallman and Gary W. Gallagher attributed the photograph to Ohio born and Corinth based photographer George Washington Armistead . However, the Library of Congress has a virtually identical photographic negative that is attributed to Nicholas D. Brown. Although the photographer's identity remains uncertain, it is clear that the drawing is by Walton Taber and is signed by him in the lower left corner of the image. Washington, D. C.: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), 1978. Official NASA black and white photograph of the NASA astronaut Norm Thagard in civilian clothes. The photo was taken while he was still an astronaut candidate. Thagard flew on 4 shuttle missions: STS-51B, STS-30, STS-7, STS-42. He also was the first American to ride in a Russian spacecraft when he was a crew member on Mir 18. SIGNED, without inscription, "Norm Thagard". Boston: J. Shaw, 1828. iv, 300 pages. This early gothic novel, originally published in 1805 under the author's marital name (Thayer), attempted to reveal the personal and social hazrds of gambling. Caroline Matilda Warren, like Poe and Hawthorne, was an imitator of the work of Charles Brockden Brown, the seminal figure of American gothic literature. The book has been sympathetically rebacked in cloth over the original paper-covered boards and has a new paper title patch appropriate to the period. Marguerite Gardner was a socialite and writer who published two travelogues/memoirs: The Idler in Italy (1939) and The Idler in France (1941). First printings of the latter are much more scarce. Our example is enhanced by the gilt decorated binding signed by Stikeman & Co., art bookbinders who frequently rebound books for Scribner's in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The books are in near-fine condition: bindings a clean, bright and tight, with minimal color rubbing along joints; pages are clean and bright, with perhaps the barest hint of toning.. First Edition. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.  On the cover are a block of four 8-cents stamps and a Fleetwood lithographed cartouche.  Both the cartouche and the stamps feature the Statue of Liberty.  The postmark is April 9, 1954; so the signature obviously came later (that is usually the case with autographed first day covers).  We guarantee that the autograph is original and authentic.  The signature is bright and unfaded; the cover is clean, bright, and unwrinkled, with a thin rust line on the rear that has faintly bled through to the front.. Manitou, Colorado: James Thurlow, 1870. Circa 1870s albumen landscape stereoview that includes a distant image of a Native American tepee with a horse and what appears to be a Native American man standing nearby. James Thomas Thurlow (1831-1878) was a British-born immigrant who had a photography studio in Manitou, Colorado during the 1870s. The stereoview is in very good condition: the image is clean and bright, on a mount that has very minor edgewear and soiling. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. Cambridge, England: Unpublished, 1951. Original handwritten letter from E. M. W. Tillyard to College of William and Mary English Professor Fraser Neiman in response to Neiman's invitation for Tillyard to lecture at W&M.  It is a gracious and chatty letter in which Tillyard lays out his plans for a visit to the U.S. for lectures at Johns Hopkins and expresses his hope that his health will allow him to include W&M on his visit.  As for his health, he provides more than the expected detail about his problem with his appendix.  The letter is on the letterhead of The Master's Lodge, Jesus College, Cambridge (Tillyard was the Master) and is in the original mailing envelope.  Both letter and envelope are in very good condition.. Postal cover honoring the 20th anniversary of the July 24, 1954 successful test of the "Moon-Bounce" technology that was to become the basis for future satellite communication. The postal cover is boldly SIGNED, "James Trexler" by the scientist who had first come up with the idea 9 years earlier.and was largely responsible for the successful test at the Naval Research Laboratory in Stumpy Neck, Maryland. The dust jacket is a lithograph after a cutout by Matisse that was created for this issue of Verve. Art historian Margaret Culbertson argues that the cover was an early act of French resistance to Nazi Germany: "Work on the issue started during the ominous summer before, as the world waited to see if Hitler would respect the Munich Agreement. The magazine’s editor, Efstratios Tériade, commissioned the artist Henri Matisse to design the cover.The aging artist, with anxiety fueled by memories of WWI, regularly visited Tériade’s Paris office.
