The portrait is of the author, a pioneer in Chinese mycology. A very good, clean copy.

Publisher's semi-uniform blue and green cloth with gilt title on the front boards and spines. = A magnificent work on Mesozoic and Tertiary flowering plants including many trees, based mainly very well-preserved leaves and seeds, with numerous new species. It was published over a long period, past the end of the Soviet period, hence the different titles. Volume 1 deals with Magnoliaceae - Eucommiaceae. Volume 2 was published in 1982 with the same general title, and deals with Ulmaceae - Betulaceae; volume 3 has the new post-Sovjet title, Magnoliophyta fossilia Rossiae et Civitatum Finitimarum, with L. Green endpapers with map of the region. = A rare dedication copy of a seldom-seen regional flora of Yerevan and surroundings in Armenia. With a large alphabetical list of Latin plant names. This is the revised and enlarged second edition (first 1945). In Russian with Armenian summaries. The first author, Armen Leonovich Takhtajan or Takhtajian (1910-2009) "... was a Soviet-Armenian botanist, one of the most important figures in 20th century plant evolution and systematics and biogeography. His other interests included morphology of flowering plants, paleobotany, and the flora of the Caucasus." (Wikipedia). With a handwritten dedication by the first author to "Frans", i.e. the Dutch botanist Frans Antonie Stafleu (1921-1997). A very good, clean copy.

Poona, Government, 1909-1911. Large 4to (29.8 x 23.2 cm). 1155 pp. [vi, 508, xxvi; xxxix, 574]; two tissue-guarded frontispieces, 541 text engravings. Contemporary uniform half morocco over linen boards. Spines with five broad, raised bands and two gilt-lettered labels. = The magnum opus of the Irish botanist William Alexander Talbot (1847-1917), conservator of Forests in Bombay between 1901 and 1909. Volume one deals with Ranunculaceae to Rosaceae; volume two with Rhizophoraceae to Gramineae. The large text figures are quite detailed. The figures are numbered consecutively, but pagination of volume two starts anew. In 1976 a cheap reprint was published, but this is the very rare original edition. Free endpapers with a vertical crease. Index leaf pp. iii-iv partly torn and chipped, however without text loss. Otherwise clean, unmarked. In all a good set of this rare forest flora, very well illustrated and with broad margins. Stafleu and Cowan, 13682.

Original blind-stamped burgundy cloth. Spine with gilt lines and title. = The second edition, which was expanded and updated compared to the 1905 first, but has only three plates, whereas the first had ten. Uncut. Provenance: Inscribed and dated ("London, April 1939") by a former owner, the Indian entomologist Samarendra Nath Maulik (1881-1950) in the top margin of the title page. Maulik himself contributed to the Fauna of British India series, being the author of several parts on Coleoptera. Library stamp on front free endpaper verso, label on spine foot, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Publisher's black cloth with yellow title on front board and spine. = A detailed and well-illustrated monograph with fine line drawings and photos of many new or poorly known species. The Chamaemyiidae or silver-flies "...are a small family of acalyptrate flies with less than 200 species described worldwide. The larvae of these small flies are active and predatory and are often used for biological control of aphids, scale insects, and similar pests. Chamaemyiid fossils are poorly represented in amber deposits, but a few examples are known from the Eocene epoch onwards" (Wikipedia). This is Fauna USSR series number 134. Unmarked. A near mint copy.

Original green cloth wit gilt title on the spine and gilt borders and title on the front board. Greyish-green endpapers. = A well-illustrated regional flora, with emphasis on tree and shrubs, by the Czech botanist Anton Tannich (1882-1967). With on the front free endpaper recto a handwritten dedication, in Czech, by the author, signed and dated, to prof. Dr. K. Kavinovi (Kavinovi = Kavina]. And with the botanical/microscopical pictorial bookplate of the Czech botanist Prof. Dr. Karel K. Kavina (1890-1948) on the front pastedown. Slight wear to the gilt borders, othrwise a very good copy.

Torino, Stamperia Reale, 1876. Large 4to (28.5 x 21.1 cm). 155 pp.; four chromolithographed and partly hand-coloured plates, heightened with gum arabic. Later brown buckram with gilt title on the spine. Edges sprinkled red. = A very rare work on the Mollusca collected during the voyage around the world by the Italian frigate "Magenta". The work includes the description and illustration of many new species of marine and non-marine gastropods, and of marine bivalves. New species include trochids, neritids, a Pecten, a chiton, nudibranchs, etc., etc. Many are from South America, several from Australia (e.g. Auricula australiana, Aplexa adamsiana), Japan, and the Philippines. The plates by Conti are superb. Published by the Academia delle Scienze di Torino, of which the Italian malacologist Cesare Maria Tapparone-Canefri (1838-1891) was a member. This Mme de Beaumont may well be based on or actually represent the wife of the famous Elie de Beaumont. The title page states that there are 23 plates, but that is an error. No wrappers. = Of these two groups of Schizopodae, the British zoologist Walter Medley Tattersal (1882-1943) was the leading specialist during the first half of the 20th century. He wrote numerous papers on these groups. This early paper - illustrated by Tatterall - on the results of the first Percy Sladen expedition, however, is seldom seen. Published in the Society's Transactions. Spine with a paper strip, but no wrappers included. Otherwise a very good, unmarked copy.

Gilt title on the spine. = Written by the German geologist Joseph Rudolph Zappe (1751-1818). This work includes the descriptions and illustrations of many new species, chiefly bivalves and brachiopods. The plates also show upper Triassic Echinodermata, ammonites, and gastropods. Published in the Abhandlungen der K. K. Geolische Reichsanstalt. Bound in the rear: O. Reiss, "Ueber die Lithiotiden" (1903). Published in the same series, and dealing with an enigmatic Jurassic bivalve genus. It has 44 pages, several text figures and seven plates. Small library stamp of Dr. H. Zapfe in the title page top margin. A very good, clean copy.

Printed label on rear board. = A fine, wonderfully preserved taxidermy cased specimen of the Eurasian sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus (Linnaeus) [German: Sperber; French: épervier]. This little bird is one of Europe's most ferocious birds-of-prey, even hunting in city gardens. Its typical lifespan is four years, but the oldest-known lived for more than 20 years. Currently, the sparrowhawk is recovering from a population crash that occurred during the 1950-1980's due to pesticides. This specimen, however, is much older, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, predating 1923. The case differs from most such cases because of its more detailed and naturalistic setting. This is the work of the renowned British taxidermist Thomas Edward Gunn (1844-1923) of Norwich. Black wooden case with glass front; interior painted light blue. = A fine, wonderfully preserved, stuffed and cased specimen of a female common kestrel, Falco tinnunculus Linnaeus. [German: Turmfalke; French: faucon crécerelles; Dutch: torenvalk]. This falcon is one of the most successful birds-of-prey in the temperate regions of the Old World, occurring in a wide variety of landscapes. It preys on mice and other small animals. "The kestrel was once used to drive and keep away pigeons" (Wikipedia). This specimen probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. The case differs from most such cases in having a more detailed and naturalistic setting. This must be the work of the renowned British taxidermist T. E. Gunn. Slabber published his work, which includes his new formulas for successfully drying and mounting bird specimens, after 50 years of personal research. Taxidermy on naturalistic base (41 cm tall, including base). = A very nicely made taxidermy parrot. The crimson rosella, Platycercus elegans (Gmelin) is a parakeet from southeastern Australia, in particular New South Wales and Tasmania, but also occurring localy along the Queensland sea board, and in the eastern parts of Victoria. Two papers in one. 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm). 113, 74 pp.; two large (one very large) coloured geological maps, two folded sheets with coloured profiles. Later half calf over blue boards. Spine with four raised bands and gilt title. = A very detailed report by the American geographer and geologist Richard Cowling Taylor (1789-1851) with many tables, and descriptions of ore samples, but also with notes on the geology and geography. The maps are very good; one is surprisingly large. Some of its folds are split, but otherwise the maps are fine, the whole book is clean, unmarked, and well-bound. A very good copy.
