1727. No Binding. Near Fine. Nazareth, the hometown of MARY, is first mentioned in the New Testament, specifically in the Gospel of Luke. There it is described as a town in Galilee , where the angel Gabriel visited Mary to announce that she will give birth to Jesus (Luke 1:26-27). It is also the town where young Jesus grew up. The "House of Mary" in Nazareth is traditionally believed to have been the location of the "ANNUNCIATION". It became since Byzantine times a sacred destination of Christian pilgrimage. This etching, dated 1727, was drawn based on the descriptions by recent travelers of the early 18th century to the town - after the original Byzantine church was destroyed, and before a new church was built in 1730.
