London: Printed for G. Whitfield, 1797. First edition, iv, 32pp., upper margin of title and 'To the readers' leaf closely shaved by the binders knife (excising the word "A" from title), some light foxing and staining, inoffensive waterstain to lower gutter margin, new endpapers, recent cloth with printed paper label on upper cover. Adam Clarke (1762-1832) was an Irish born Wesleyan divine. He is probably best known for his Bibliographical Dictionary and commentary on the Bible, but I believe that his first published work is his Dissertation on the Use and Abuse of Tobacco. This was a popular anti-tobacco tract which was also reprinted several times during his life. It was one of the bitterest attacks on the habit, and became the textbook of the oppositionists. The work highlights the respiratory and muscular risks of using tobacco, and tells of the results of tests carried out on pigeons and a cat.

1947. Single sheet (222 x 126 mm), written on one side only on "The Times Literary Supplement" headed paper, 10 lines in black ink dated July 15, 1947 (see attached photograph), first line: "I only write an office note...". They met whilst Grant was a student at Oxford prior to the Second World War and kept in contact until Grant's death in 1969. Grant was a writer and academic, becoming Professor of American Literature at Leeds University. Apart from his poetry Blunden had a varied and successful literary career. He worked as a critic and reviewer for a number of publications, including a stint as assistant editor for The Times Literary Supplement in the 1940s.

First Edition, 4 parts in one, lxiv, 274pp., limited to 275 copies, this is 1 of 250 on small paper, with the title-pages to the original parts and an 8pp., `Hand-List of Books Printed at Aberdeen Printers 1620-1736' bound in at end, orig. quarter calf, head of spine chipped, uncut, t.e.g. The majority of the book (274pp.,) is a list of works published in Aberdeen or by Aberdeen printers, most of them being described in great detail, the other 64pp., are historical notes about the printers.

[1799-1806]. 6 yearly issues, (1799, 8pp; 1800, 8pp; 1801, 8pp; 1802, 8pp; 1806, 12pp; 1808, 12pp.), stitched as issued, browning and spotting as a result of the rather poor quality paper, corners worn with some loss but not to text, one or two small tears (the 1802 issue rather more so). By their very nature, these ephemeral almanacs are very rare; they were intended for issue within the year of printing and then to be thrown away. Printed on poor quality paper, they are susceptible to browning and general wear as is the case with these. Contents include: Geographical description of the world; dimensions of Scotland, England, and Ireland; a very useful table for calculating servants' wages, etc.

Later editions are in the quarto format. Contains a long list of 1,532 "Offences" that includes, Buggery, Burglary, maiming Cattle, counterfeiting Coins, Forging bank-bills, apprehending Highwaymen, killing Deer, destroying Mines, Murder, payments to the Poor, Rape, Robbing the Mail, Smugglers, etc., and the "Penalties and Punishments" to be applied. Aylesbury: Published by T. W. Faulkner; Woodman, Printer. 1820. 4to, iv, 81, [1, blank]pp., ownership signature of Thomas Field (1884), with printed label of G. H. Wyatt on front paste-down, cont. marbled boards, re-backed and new corner pieces, rubbed, joints cracked, orig. printed label on upper cover. Faulkner published this work to draw to public attention "the 'Abuse' that at the present time, and for many years past, have been existing in the distributions of 'Various Charities'... Some curious returns will surprise the Reader, of 'Large Receipt's' and 'Trifling Expenditure', yet declared the 'Trusts in Debt'; to others irregularly paid or not at all, and to numerous accounts of the annual trivial irregularly to be the produce of Gifts to the Poor, that if correct, would appear rather an 'Insult' than intended as a 'Relief'." Dublin: Printed for William Porter, 1800. 12mo, [2], ii,[ 4], xv,[ 1], 268, [8]pp., 4 hand-coloured plates (plate 4 with closed tear to gutter margin), lacks front and back blank endpaper, title page dusty, renewed endpaper stuck to gutter margin of final leaf, modern calf, rubbed, a very good working copy of a rare work.

Taunton: Printed and Sold by J. Poole, 1804. First edition, 8vo (198 x 120 mm), xii, 61, [1]pp., recent quarter calf, marbled boards, uncut, morocco label lettered in gilt on upper cover. Mr. Edlin dispels the practice of using ice and cold water as a remedy for Gout which was recommended by Dr. Kinglake, but ended in fatality for the patient. Dr. Kinglake then replies to every paragraph in Edlin's pamphlet, in a very angry stain. Copac locates Edinburgh University copy only of the Kinglake pamphlet.
