Sheet is 30 x 24 cm.; image is 14 x 11 cm. John Sartain (1808-1897) pioneered mezzotint engraving in the United States. He engraved this portrait of Benjamin Carr from a painting by John Clarendon Darley (1808-1863). Undated but probably produced in the 1830s. Number in pencil in lower right-hand corner: 7/882. In Very Good- Condition: light soiling and foxing; a crisp mezzotint image.

The New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital was founded in 1882; today it is the New York University School of Medicine. The Babies' Ward was renamed the Babies' Hospital in 1887. The report by the doctor who oversaw the Babies' Ward, Sarah J. McNutt (1839-1930), includes the stories of individual children and their poverty-stricken backgrounds. Includes lists of the officers and managers (all women) with their addresses, as well as contributors to its support. McNutt was educated at the New York Infirmary for Women and Children by Doctors Elizabeth Blackwell, Emily Blackwell, and Mary Putnam Jacobi, and other early women physicians. She was instrumental in developing the New York Infirmary for Women and Children into a hospital and woman's medical college. Front fixed endpaper bears bookplate of the Rev. J. Congreve, Overslade. John Congreve opened Overslade private classical school near Rugby, England, by 1854. In the 1860s, George Farncomb Wright became his partner in the school; they dissolved their partnership for "the tuition of young gentlemen" in 1871. The Backwoods of Canada was by English author Catherine Parr Strickland Traill (1802-1899), who emigrated to Upper Canada with her husband and sister in 1832. The Bahamas Scholarship Fund was incorporated in New York in 1963 to provide scholarships to students from the Bahamas to study in the United States. The first recipient was Edwood L. Donaldson, who was attending Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He later returned to practice medicine in the Bahamas and served in the legislature. In 1966, the directors of the fund were Richard E. Webb, Bernice Ferguson, Thomas Peterson, the Rev. Bruce P. Williamson, and Eliud John Deleveaux. The 1966 fundraising dance was held at the Renaissance Ballroom with music by the Rudy Williams Orchestra. In Very Good Condition: cover is lightly soiled; otherwise, clean and bright.

Philip Bayard (1872-1911) was descended from a long line of political and financial leaders in Philadelphia and Delaware -- he was the son, grandson, brother, and nephew of numerous prominent Bayards. Charles Chauncey Binney (1855-1913) was a lawyer in Philadelphia and the author of a biography of his grandfather Horace Binney (1780-1875). He also wrote a number of articles about voting in Pennsylvania. In the 1880s a movement began in the United States to change from the traditional public ballot to the Australian or secret ballot. Binney discusses the need for a secret ballot in Pennsylvania, which passed a ballot reform bill in 1891. Scarce. In Very Good- Condition: wrapper is detached and largely separated; light creasing at wrapper edges and minor loss at corners; pages are clean and solid.

Gilt-stamped quote from Leonardo da Vinci on inside of front of portfolio above small bookplate signed "Balma 88." Contains 4-page pamphlet with self portrait of the artist on the front, an article about the artist by Daan Hoekstra of Classical Realism Quarterly, and a resume of the artist through 1978. Loose inside this is an article about Balma's fresco at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn., from Inland Architect, and a leaf with an explanation of Buon fresco. The 7 prints, separated by glassine leaves, are: La Badia, La Muta, Mary Ann Graziano, Anthony J. Adducci, Calzaiolo, La Signora Vaselli, and The Mediatrix (folded). Each are 36 x 28 cm., except the last, which is 108 x 28 cm. Scarce. Portfolio is in Good Condition: front hinge separated from head of spine for 10 cm.; slightly soiled; prints are clean and bright.

Although a well-known German and German-American studies scholar, Albert Bernhardt Faust (1870-1951) wrote this play late in life about the war over the national bank in the United States that occured during the administration of President Andrew Jackson. Very scarce. In Good+ Condition: wrapper starting to separate at ends of spine; lower corner of front wrapper creased; wrapper is lightly soiled, and scraped at upper left-hand corner of front wrapper and inside both front and back wrappers; pages are clean and tight.

Alexander Ennis Patton (1852-1904) became the president of the First National Bank of Patton when it was established in 1893 and was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1900. The Bank of North America, the first chartered bank in the United States, was established in 1781. John Hanson Michener (1821-1906) was president of the bank for many years. Alexander Ennis Patton (1852-1904) became the president of the First National Bank of Patton when it was established in 1893 and was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1900. The Grandin brothers, John Livingston Grandin (1836-1912), William James Grandin (1838-1904), and Elijah Bishop Grandin (1840-1917), in 1859 followed the lead of Edwin Drake in Titusville, Pa., who had dug the first successful commercial oil well in the United States earlier that year.
