Description:
Phoenix, Arizona: (circa 1889). Cabinet card. Albumen photograph with "54. West End School Phoenix" captioned in the negative [18.5 cm x 11.5 cm] on an off-white card mount [21.5 cm x 13 cm], with a label for Irvine Co. Booksellers & Stationers, Phoenix A.T. and a pencil notation on the verso: "Goldwater 15". On July 4, 1887, the first Southern Pacific train arrived from Maricopa Wells, allowing more market access for Phoenix, its crops and other products. A growing population of 3,152 in 1890 required two new schools, East End School at 8th St. and Washington, and West End School at 6th Ave. and Madison, to be opened after Arizona's territorial government permanently moved its offices to Phoenix from Prescott. At the time, Phoenix was still a struggling agricultural community of dusty streets and open ditches, periodically on the verge of being destroyed by flood, fire, disease, or drought.

Description:
San Francisco: A.M. Robertson, 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. This eclectic collection of verse is split into four parts. The first consists of 33 of the fantastic poems for which Sterling was so famous, followed by three poems on the Panama-Pacific Exposition and four personal poems, and concluding with 43 poems on the then-ongoing First World War. An Oakland contemporary of Joaquin Miller and Jack London, George Sterling (1869-1926) later became one of the first residents of Carmel and a leading supporter of the poetry of fellow bohemian Robinson Jeffers. Sterling is said to be the inspiration for two Jack London characters: Russ Brissenden in Martin Eden (1909) and Mark Hall in The Valley of the Moon (1913). Inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Sterling to Mary Elizabeth Fenn on the front flyleaf, with Fenn's bookplate on the front pastedown. Small octavo. London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. This satire of London literary circles is widely considered a roman à clef with Maugham as Ashenden, Thomas Hardy as Driffield, and Hugh Walpole as Kear. In his introduction to the 1950 Modern Library edition of this novel, Maugham wrote, "I am willing enough to agree with common opinion that Of Human Bondage is my best work [...] But the book I like best is Cakes and Ale [...] because in its pages lives for me again the woman with the lovely smile who was the model for Rosie Driffield." Octavo: 270 p. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt and black stamping. Just the slightest hint of foxing; else near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some very mild toning along the spine.

Description:
A collection of 1950s and '60s political buttons supporting causes and candidates ranging from the Vietnam anti-war movement to Ronald Reagan's campaign for the California governorship. This group consists of 56 unique metal pinback buttons, which are housed in a period cardboard box. Most of the buttons are coated paper with metal backing; some are union printed. Several of the political pins relate directly to Northern California. For example, a button for the Free Speech F.S.M. is associated with the 1964-65 student protest at the University of California, Berkeley, the first mass act of civil disobedience on an American college campus in the 1960s. The orange and black Viva Kennedy button in this collection is representative of clubs formed by Latinx supporters of John F. Kennedy during his 1968 presidential campaign. The Viva Kennedy clubs began in Texas as a forum for Mexican American veterans to rally support for equal rights, and eventually spread to swing states with large Latinx… Read More
