Lacks the engraved title and preliminary matter before p.1 (A1) which is the part title to Book I. The printed text ends at p.490 (3P4). The missing leaves are all supplied in 18th century German manuscript. Five engraved part titles, including that to Rythmomachia. Many engravings in the text, some full page. Lacks the folding plate. Contemporary vellum with the title inked on the spine. Wormed at the foot of both boards and some loss of vellum at the foot of the spine. Paper unformly toned with a few water stains. Pinholes of worm to lower margins of signatures A & B, not touching the text. Despite its defects a usable copy of the first book on chess in German.

Engraved title page, 70 woodcuts in the text illustrating archtectural styles and details. Recent panelled calf binding in period style. The spine with raised bands and the old label re-laid. Internally clean, crisp and well margined. A very good copy.

Front endpaper partly detached, with two short notes in early hands. Contents clean and tight on uniformly toned paper. From the library of Anna Simoni.

Kempis collates A - S8 (- A1, titlepage and - S8 blank.) Engraved title to Boethius and an engraved plate at A4 verso in Kempis. Bound in contemporary black sheepskin, ornately gilt in an ornate design utilising volute tools in the corners and a built up centre with drawer handle tools, infilled with stars, flowers and dots. The spine ornately gilt in four panels between raised bands. One corner neatly repaired and a little surface wear to the spine, otherwise in lovely condition. All edges gilt. Original headbands re-attached and endpapers renewed using old Dutch Marble to the original pattern. Discrete marginal repairs to two leaves, not affecting the text area.

Modern grained morocco binding. Spine with raised bands and a contrasting label. Paper uniformly toned, with slight marginal loss to title and minor worm to final leaf which affects one letter of text. Early six line verse epitaphium in manuscript on the final page. A very good copy. De fide meretricum and De fide concubinarum have separate title pages. Paulus Olearius is named on the title page as the author of De fide concubinarum and Hartlieb is generally regarded as the author of De fide meretricum. First published in 1515. A well known collection of stories on drunkenness. Vicaire 397.

Venetiis. Apud Aldum. , 1589.. 1589 [12], 211, [1] p. Later (18th century?)continental half vellum with marbled boards. The spine with four raised bands and two labels. A large armorial bookplate c. 1900 on the front pastedown of Harry Bertram McCaskie M.A.,M.D. The title page is a little dusty with two pinholes of worm, one penetrating only the title, the other through the prelims to A1. Otherwise a clean, crisp copy with good margins. "Anania believed in the existence of both arial and subterranean demons. He held that demons only pretend to shun certain constellations and regarded both astrological and necromantic images as operative only by demon aid... He believed that demons are terrified by relics of the saints, but that they are cast out now less than formerly" (Thorndike).

Some leaves have been washed. The final leaf carries Pynson's Explicit with his large device on the verso. A piece torn from the lower corner of Biii affects a few words on five lines of text. A similar but smaller triangular loss on Biiii is clear of the text. Two pinholes of worm are visible through the second half of the volume and a marginal paper fault on Kii just touches two letters of text. Good margins all round with one or two marginalia. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in brown half morocco, the spine with raised bands and lettered direct.
