Description:
London: Lawrence & Wishart, 1982. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Second, revised, edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm, 363pp. Originally published in 1946 as English Chamber Music, this work rapidly established itself not only as the standard general account of the richest period of English music composition, but as an outstanding example of the study of cultural history. Inspired by the work of English social historians, principally R H Tawney, Meyer set out to represent a period of musical history as a natural part of a general social development. In doing so he found himself confronting such questions as: what was the reason for the for the appearance of so extensive and significant a period of art? Why was its music unknown on the continent? Why did it not become the pride at least of the English people themselves? Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with just a little light wear.

London: Tate Gallery, 2011. First Edition. . Hardback. Good Plus. First edition. Hardback, bound in black card covered boards. 17.5 × 12.5cm, 192pp. Signed and dated, with hand-drawn CND symbol to the title page. @earth is as revolutionary in form as it is in content. It contains no words: instead it tells its story in the universal language of photomontage, long the favoured medium of radical artists. Peter Kennard is one such, whose work has consistently questioned power structures and injustice, from his anti-nuclear works of the 1980s to his powerful works in response to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. @earth is a photo-essay in seven chapters, combining new works, made together with Tarek Salhany, with iconic images from throughout Kennard's 40-year career. In turn challenging, shocking, unsettling and poignant, @earth makes a powerful statement about the impending eco-crisis, the arms race and the injustices of the power structures dominating today's world. Woodbridge: Antique Collectors' Club, 2009. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22.5 × 15cm, 95pp. El (Eleazar) Lissitzky (1890-1941) was a vital force in the revolutionary period in Russia. Having first trained in engineering and architecture and later becoming a painter and illustrator, his creative activity ranged across disciplines. This he called 'the interchange station between painting and architecture', and it made him enormously influentialas a painter, graphic designer, teacher, propagandist, exhibition designer, and also as an architectural theorist. Lissitzky had studied in Germany before the Russian Revolution, and after it he became a vital link between Soviet culture and Western art groups, travelling officially to present Soviet art in the West, but at the same time contacting many leading figures in Western art, including the De Stilj group in Holland, Dadaists in Switzerland and Germany, and artists and designers…

Rutland, Vermont & Tokyo: Charles E Tuttle, 1954. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16cm, 146pp. The period between the fall of the Tang dynasty in 907 and the establishment of the Song in 960 is often dismissed as a bleak chapter in Chinese history, a half-century of national disunity and anarchy. However, while it is true that the north during this time was continually ravaged by attacks from Khitans and Turks, the south enjoyed a time of peace, economic prosperity, and cultural growth. This engaging study by the eminent Sinologist Edward H. Schafer examines the so-called Empire of Min, centered in the coastal and semi-tropical present-day province of Fujian. Professor Schafer describes the geography, government, and political structure of Min, as well as its economy, arts, literature, and religion. As those familiar with the work of Professor Schafer might expect, the interesting economic and political…

Description:
London: Scala Publishers, 1999. First Edition. . Paperback. Very Good. First edition, first impression. Stiff card covers. 22 × 22.5cm, 64pp. Signed directly to the half-title page by Peter Hume. Peter Hume embarks on an architectural pilgrimage to the great medieval cathedrals of England. The sites that he visits provide an evocative record of English history; they show the spirit of Saxon builders at work, the power of the Normans after the Conquest, the expression of new ideas arising from the Reformation, and the resurgence of religious life after the Restoration. This book presents the cathedrals in the order in which the author saw them. Over 40 of his rich watercolours are reproduced in colour, and a double-page spread is devoted to each cathedral. Hume's paintings reveal the genius of design, quality and craftsmanship of buildings that were originally built, not as works of art but as a homage to the glory of God.
