A detailed illustrated history of England's acoustic defence system between the wars. The majority were on the South Coast around the Hythe and Romney Marsh areas, and were huge concrete domes (known as mirrors) that reflected distant sounds of enemy aeroplanes, and from this sound the distance could be calculated. They preceded radar and some remain today as rather brutal but beautiful structures. Condition: This copy is in very good condition.

Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 13cm, 188pp. A collection of tales either by Edgar Allan Poe or that influenced him. There are two Poe novellas: The Journal of Julius Rodman, and Who is the Murderer?, and also A Dream in which Poe describes a strange vision of the Crucifixtion. The other tales are ones that Poe acknowledged reading and include tales of premature burial, a man trapped beneath a clanging bell, and of a doomed girl reborn and doomed again. The final two works are influenced by Poe and are written by Robert Haining and Robert Bloch. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with a hint of fading to the spine.

He studied at the Slade School of Art, worked in Zimbabwe and Nigeria for twenty years, an experience that would contribute significantly to his creative vision. With black and illustrations, this book contains Edgar Degas's letters from 1871 to 1910, with an index of recipients. Condition: Good condition. The book is a bit rubbed and bumped but in perfectly good readable condition.

A stunning cover on this guide to the electrics of motoring (battery, coil ignition, lamps, horn, wipers etc), published by Joseph Lucas, a company founded in Birmingham in 1897 and manufacturer of lamps, and electrical components for coaches, cards etc. This has a few small illustrations and technical diagrams inside but it's the cover that stands out. Condition: Whilst there is some light bumping and creasing to the covers, this copy remains in remarkable good condition for age.

The postcard measures approx 11 × 9cm, and has the address '4, Upper Berkeley Street, Portman Square' printed across the top. It is dated June 14, 1899, and reads "Dear Miss Gladstone, We are going to a dance on the 23rd, so I am sorry to say it is impossible for us to accept your kind invitation for that night. Yours truly, E G Anderson". Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was born in 1836, and was the elder sister of Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the politician, writer, activist and campaigner for women's suffrage. She was a member of the Langham Place Group, the club that supported and promoted women's rights in education and employment. A long poem from James Flitton, which is described in the preface thus "the author of this poem has endeavoured to place before the present generation one or two phases of English life and custom 'sixty years ago', when the machinery of society was not at such high pressure, and life was living to exist and enjoy a happy and rational state of being." Condition: Good condition. The book is in strong readable condition, but the front hinge is cracked and a little loose though not detached.
