Leeds: Richard Jackson,, 1913.. 1913 443 p. Frontis., 13 plates. Blue cloth binding, gilt with light rubbing to the edges and corners. Some paper spotting, mostly at the front and back of the volume, otherwise clean and bright. The editors were daughter and granddughter respectively of the fifth Earl. Enclosed is a four page letter from Evelyn Pelham gifting the book to 'Dear Dr. Bradbury' in 1916. There is evidence of a rusty paperclip which previously held the letter in place. One of the family residences was Cobham Hall, near Rochester, Darnley was M.P. for Canterbury 1818-1830.

Contemporary blind ruled calf, neatly rebacked at some time and with a contrasting label. The leather with some surface loss and wear on the corners. The inner joints strengthened with cloth strips and the endpapers replaced. Ownership inscriptions of Alexander Keith, possibly Alexander Keith of Ravelston a friend of Sir Walter Scott. The first of three Hague printings by Brown. All are scarce. ESTC R33416. Madan 37.

Two volumes bound in one. Contemporary Italian binding of half sheepskin with marbled sides. Spine with contrasting lettering piece. Neatly rebacked preserving the original label and endpapers. Old library accession number on verso of title to Vol. I and a cropped presentation inscription.

Henry Johnston has written his name on the front board and several other members of the Johnston family have written their names inside including Helen Johnston of Sharps Academy, Perth. There is also the label of D. Wood, Bokseller, Perth. A short repaired tear to p. 15/16 with no loss. Otherwise in very good condition for a multiple-user school book.

Additional engraved title page. First edition, dated from the colophon. Contemporary sheepskin binding with a modern reback and label. Replacement endpapers. Printed on thick paper which is clean and crisp with only a few signs of handling. ESTC R9410. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Francis Fremantle. A book difficult to find in its complete state. Stone is best known for his surviving sculptural output which includes the effigy of John Donne in St. Pauls, but he also had a successful career as an architect.

Joints of early reback cracked, but boards soundly attached. Early annotations on the endpapers and blank verso of the frontis., with some show through to the frontis. Otherwise clean and tight. A very good copy. There was a London printing (also in latin) in the same year and a number of later reprints in London and in Europe.
