Long, critical essay by Marcel Jerome Riggolot (1786-1854) about the life and work of Italian painter Giorgio Barbarelli (1477/78-1510). Known as Giorgio, Barbarelli, although he died in his thirties, is credited along with Titian by art historians for the Venetian school of Italian Renaissance painting. Rigollot (1786- 1854) was a French doctor and antiquarian best known for his archeological studies of early European inhabitants. Charles Athanese Walckenaer (1771 - 1852) was an Oxford-educated French civil servant and scientist, expert in geography. The inscription at the top of the front cover was in the year of Walckenaer's death with "homage de l'auteur". Covers soiled, with light water stain traversing the upper left corner of the cover and first three pages.

Cream paper over boards (toned and rubbed), gilt title front, green cloth spine, unpaginated (some leaves uncut), every page decorated in vivid green and red Arts&Crafts surround. Unknown number of copies. With the bookplate on pastedown of Elisha Whipple McGuire (1854-1940), educator, lawyer and bibliophile, whose book collection was sold in auction in 1931, mostly early Americana. Bookplate designed by R. Sneider, Jr., NY. Some edgewear, sound binding, some incidental spotting internally but overall internals quite nice. OCLC lists only one copy at one library, Rutgers in New Jesey.

Scarce first edition, metaphysical meanderings of Baron Mackenzie, leading to biological questions about the size of the brain and intelleigence, among other things. Rebound in full mottled leather, gilt rules and cevices front and back, more gilt and red later label on spine. 8vo, vi, (2), 301, foldout plate of outlines of skulls. Covers slightly bowed, as the book has been pressed down after being water-soaked. Some "crinkling" of ;leaves remains, as does light staining to some sections of the book, largely confined to wide margins. Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, 7th Baronet (1780-1848) was a Scottish geologist, chemist, agricultural improver, and author perhaps best known for "Travels in the Island of Iceland" (1807).

He was a major candidate for President in the election of 1812, challenging incumbent James Madison. Provenance: from the library of American commercial artist Irv Docktor (1918-2008) with his expressively graphic signature on the ffe.
