Description:
[N.p., likely near Bogalusa, La, 1914. Very good.. [5]pp., on a single folded sheet of cardstock. Oblong 12mo. Some toning and dust-soiling, light chipping to one edge. A seemingly unrecorded promotional item touting the economic advantages of Bogalusa, Louisiana, located near the Mississippi border in the northeastern portion of the state. The population of the town is given as "10,000, of which 6500 are whites and 3500 colored." The text primarily promotes the lumber industry, as well as the mills, railroads, schools, hotels, and other amenities offered by the town. One item brags that "Every house occupied by a white person, in Bogalusa, has modern sanitary conveniences and electric lights." The last two lines highlight Bogalusa's "fine Base Ball Park" and that fact that "There were 363 babies born in Bogalusa in the year 1913" (the only date listed anywhere on the item). No copies of the present publication in OCLC - just a similarly titled but more official publication produced by the Bogalusa… Read More

Description:
[New York: Haven Press, 1947. Very good.. 190pp., plus four pages of photographic portraits preceding the text. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt. Minor rubbing and spotting to boards. Text lightly toned but clean. A scarce collection of poetry and prose by Frank B. Coffin of Little Rock, Arkansas. Coffin, an African-American pharmacist and poet, was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, earned his pharmacist's diploma at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and spent the rest of his life as one of the first Black pharmacists in Little Rock. Two books of his poems were published during his life -- Coffin's Poems With Ajax' Ordeals published in 1897 and this book, published fifty years later. Both volumes are difficult to find, so we are not sure how much of the material in the present work appeared in some form in the earlier book. We notice that Ajax, who shows up in the title of the first book, appears in the title of sixteen poems in this later book. Other intriguing titles in the present work… Read More

Description:
[N.p., likely Hansford, Tx.], 1909. Very good.. Printed broadside, 22 x 7.5 inches. Moderate even toning, a few short closed edge tears, old folds. A very rare broadside listing the "cash premiums" for various livestock, crop yields, prepared foods, and other products and services at an agricultural fair in Hansford, Texas in the first decade of the 20th century. Hansford is located in the far north-central portion of the Texas panhandle. Among other interesting details, the text at the top of the broadside indicates the previous year's fair was centered around the promotion of the Enid, Ochiltree and Western Railroad. The fair advertised here brought together the ranchers of three counties - Hansford, Hutchinson, and Ochiltree - for the 1909 fair, which would once again focus on "encouraging agricultural development" in the area. The livestock detailed here include horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, and poultry. Among the crops to be judged are wheat, oats, barley, corn, alfalfa, peas, beans, potatoes,… Read More

Numerous well-executed tape repairs and reinforcements along fold lines and edges. Minor soiling and rubbing. Originally a separate unincorporated town, Elmhurst was annexed by Oakland in 1909, and today is considered part of East Oakland. The present promotional work on Elmhurst includes a variety of text touting the advantages of the subdivision, including "Cement sidewalks laid in front of every lot," "No residence smaller than 10 x 125 feet," and "A Perfect Paradise for Children." Description:
[Philadelphia, 1920. Good.. [4]pp. on a single folded sheet. Quarto. Tanned and somewhat brittle, minor edge chipping, some short closed edge tears. A seemingly unrecorded promotional touting the talents of the now-obscure Famous Suwanee River Quartette. The group, formed in Cleveland, Ohio around 1910 and led by John Gantt, traveled extensively for almost fifteen years, and became especially well-known for their rendition of "Old Black Joe," which is mentioned here. The present pamphlet, a most ephemeral item, advertises the group with press releases, reviews, "recent press comments," descriptions of the musical strengths of Gantt as well as the other performers as a whole. The text claims that "Mr. Gantt is entitled to supremacy in this field...he is a master interpreter of the songs, melodies, and folk lore of the Southern Negro." The work is illustrated with photographs of the musicians with their instruments on both the front cover and the internal two-page spread. No copies in OCLC.

A rare little volume published by author and English instructor Harry Houston Peckham, possibly in North Carolina during his time teaching there. Ink ownership inscription on inside front cover, "Purchased August 1910 Mr. Pickard Kennedy." Occasional spotting, minor toning, a few leaves creased. An uncommon book of poetry by an obscure African American author named Paul Lindsay Russell. According to the introduction of the author here, Russell was born in "a little hamlet in the State of South Carolina in 1890." Also according to the introduction, Russell did not enjoy the privilege of an education, and "his knowledge of reading was picked up at odd times, often under the most trying conditions." However, this did not deter Russell from becoming an author: "Mr. Russell from his earliest infancy was a dreamer, and as soon as he learned to read, he had the peculiar ability of writing poetry in his own way." Magee, a noted photographer of the Blackfeet Native American tribes in Northwestern Montana during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Magee maintained a commercial studio in Browning, Montana, which was continued by his son Henry following his death in 1930. The elder Magee was married to a Blackfeet Pikuni woman named Julia Howling and was a friendly colleague of Walter McClintock, the most prolific of the early 20th-century Montana Indian photographers. Like McClintock, he had the trust of the Blackfeet (in this case, because of his marriage), and therefore had greater access to their daily lives and activities. Description:
Sacramento, 1869. Still very good.. 43pp. Original printed wrappers. Spine ends chipped; light wear and dust soiling to wraps. Even tanning, occasional foxing internally. Biannual message of Governor Henry Huntly Haight to the state legislature of California at the outset of its eighteenth session in December 1869. Haight was notable for his strongly racist and anti-immigrant views, and was elected in 1867 with no prior experience based on his anti-Chinese, anti-Reconstruction platform. Remarkably he was an early Republican and supported both Frémont and Lincoln for President, but joined the Democratic Party in 1863 after the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation. His views are reflected in the present address, particularly in the section on immigration: "We need population -- not of races inferior in natural traits, pagan in religion, ignorant of free institutions, and incapable of sharing in them without putting the very existence of those institutions in peril -- but we need immigrants… Read More
