Description:
This book was a best-seller when it was first published in 1956. It was written by the Anglo-Australian war correspondent Alan Moorehead (1910-1983). (It was also the famous 1981 film that launched Mel Gibson's career.)
It is a vivid chronicle of adventure, suspense, agony, and heroism--and a tragic waste of human life, particularly for the Australians. When Turkey unexpectedly sided with Germany in World War I, Winston Churchill, as First Sea Lord, conceived a plan of smashing through the Dardanelles, reopening the Straits to Russian shipping, and immobilizing the Turks. On the night of March 18, 1915, this plan nearly succeeded--the Turks were virtually beaten. But poor communication left the Allies in the dark, allowing the Turks to prevail and the Allies to suffer a crushing quarter-million casualties.
Unclipped dust jacket. 318 pages, including photos--many of them in color. The spine is white and there is a little bit of ink transfer from the jacket to the spine. Otherwise mint condition.NOTE:… Read More

Description:
This is a pristine first edition of The Gardens of English Heritage, published in 2010. It reminds us how far garden history has advanced in recognition and social value. The importance of conserving historic gardens through preservation, and their re-creation through restoration, is now understood as being necessary. English Heritage has been at the forefront of this positive change. This book introduces the gardens cared for by English Heritage and its work to balance the need of conservation, public access and education. In coffee-table format, it is packed with current and archive photographs accompanying the history of 23 English Heritage gardens, from the high Victorian pleasure gardens of Osborne House, through the grounds of the romantic ruin of Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, to the landscape park of Chiswick House in London. It is a large, heavy, expensive book.: 216 pages, 10" x 12" x 1 1/8"The book was processed for lending by my local library, but it was never put out on the shelves for… Read More

Description:
This is actually an art history textbook, but it's a fascinating read and a must-have for those interested in art history. It was first written by Helen Gardner in 1926 but was continuously updated; this is the 8th edition, written by Richard Tansey and Horst de la Croix.I attach photos of the table of contents. From a Review:"The market-leading text for art history, Gardner's Art Through the Ages is a comprehensive guide to the defining phases of the world's artistic tradition. It tells the story of art in its full historical, social, religious, economic and cultural context and provides a deep understanding of art, architecture, painting and sculpture."This copy is in near-mint condition. Its flaws are one fingerprint and two ink marks--one on the front cover and one on the back. It's 1008 pages, including loads of photos. It weighs 6 lbs.The purchase price includes the high postage, as long as you're in the US or Canada.

Description:
This is a lovely clean copy of The Gates of Ivory, Margaret Drabble's 13th novel, published in 1991.
Margaret Drabble (born 1939-) is an English novelist, biographer and critic who has published 20 novels.
This is the first Canadian edition, published by McClelland Stewart.
It involves four intellectuals in Margaret Thatcher's London, a mysterious package and the difficult pilgrimage of an English writer through war-torn lands.
It has been called 'intellectually stimulating and very smart'.
462 pages.
White dust jacket, white covers, white book, all nice and bright.
The reason I haven't classified it as 'Fine' is because the original owner's name is on the front endpaper (her signature is small and attractive).

Description:
This is a matching set of two historical books by the Canadian-English journalist John Prebble (1951-2001). Prebble was the preeminent authority on Scottish history. He wrote Culloden in 1962 and, in 1966, Glencoe: The Story of the Massacre. In 1996, the Folio Society published the two books together, with commissioned covers and wood engravings by the English artist Harry Brockway. The books were best-sellers and the copies I have are from the third printing.
Cloth covers with Brockway's art. Lovely creamy paper. No shelfwear. They have not been read and are in mint condition.

'You are hereby ordered to fall upon the rebels, the MacDonalds of Glencoe, and to put all to the sword under seventy.'This was the treacherous and cold-blooded order ruthlessly carried out on 13 February 1692, when the Campbells slaughtered their hosts the MacDonalds at the Massacre of Glencoe. Description:
In nine chapters, The Golden Scarecrow presents nine stories of nine children, united by location. A tenth story of a tenth life, divided into Prologue and Epilogue, provides a different sort of unity. They are both gentle and horrible tales.
This book is an exercise in entering into the minds/hearts of children
The premise is that children come into this world with a knowledge of the world they have left behind and a spiritual link to it through a companion just referred to as their Friend. Some adults are able to mature without losing their Friend and some children push him away when they are still small. It needs the heart of a child and a willingness to believe in things we can't see.
Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884 - 1941) was one of the most popular authors of his time. He wrote 36 novels, and five volumes of short stories; his most famous novel is Rogue Herries.
The Golden Scarecrow was first published by Cassell in 1915, then the copyright was transferred to MacMillan.
