Sammelband comprising two works, bequeathed by Transcendentalist Ellery Channing to historian of Transcendentalism and supporter of John Brown, F.B. Sanborn. Inscription on a preliminary in Sanborn's hand reading: "F.B. Sanborn 1901, Bought by Ellery Channing of D.C. Colesworthy in Boston, Bequeathed by E.C. to F.B.S. 1901." Further inscribed by Sanborn on flyleaf: "Two very curious brochures here brought together. The distances and roads from Boston are still (1912) mainly correct. I was on Marshpee with Morton Watson driving over from Plymouth via Sandwich about 1884." Hales' Survey of Boston relates closely to his mapping of the region. One of New England's greatest mapmakers, John Groves Hales (ca. 1785-1832) was born in England, where he became a civil engineer and surveyor, prior to emigrating to Portsmouth, New Hampshire around 1810. His first published maps appeared in 1813. These were Map of the Compact Part of Portsmouth and A Map of Upper and Lower Canada, both carrying a Portsmouth…

Description:
[ca. 1885]. Albumen print photograph, 6.5" x 8.5", on green paperboard mount, 8" x 11". An evocative image of steam rising over ledge, with a background figure looking over the edge. F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921), nicknamed the Professor, was the official Yellowstone photographer from 1884-1921 and took the first known winter photographs of Yellowstone Park in 1887 on a 29-day, 200 mile epic journey to the Lower and Upper Geyser basins and Yellowstone Falls. Prior to this, Haynes had been the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad after purchasing a train car for a photo studio and trading publicity photos for the pulling of his car. Haynes sold his photos at Yellowstone and published in books and journals. In 1897, when the Post Office started mailing "penny postals," Haynes and his son Jack produced postcards for the tourists which further spread the word of Yellowstone's natural wonders throughout the U. S. and Europe. Haynes played a major role in documenting the early history of the…

Occasional ms. underlining of proper names, and a few pieces of paper with text pasted in the text, as well as one pasted newspaper clipping. Other contents noted hereafter. Hazlitt & Reed, Printers, 90 Washington St. 4to, original purple cloth, gilt title at cover, blind-stamped borders to both covers. [9], 12-72, [2] pp., illus., ads. Second edition, identified on the title page as "Hotel edition." Scarce account of the construction of the Chicago Lake Tunnel, built as a means of supplying the city with clean water, and generally considered one of the most remarkable engineering feats of the period. By the 1860s the waters in the immediate vicinity of Chicago were so badly polluted that the city faced a water supply crisis. Various solutions were proposed before the city adopted that of engineer E. S. Chesbrough to build a tunnel two miles in length beneath the floor of Lake Michigan, in order to tap the clean water at a distance from the city. The first edition of this fascinating account was published in 1867. This…
