First published in German in 1899, this work contains de Vries' theory of the pangene, a morphological structure carrying hereditary material. It was from here that the word "gene" was derived by Johannsen. This edition of "one of the most important books in the history of genetics" (DSB) was translated by C. Stuart Gager.

Blumenbach believed that an organism's morphology was capable of being modified by the environment and that the resultant changes were inherited. New York: Privately printed for the Members of the Schnitzler Society, 1929. Title within blue decorative border. Cloth-backed boards, spine soiled, edges and corners rubbed. Uncut. A FANTASTIC CONTROVERSY. Privately printed; ours is number 335 of 1475. An amusing play in ten short dialogues which traces a sexual circle starting with the seduction of a young soldier by a prostitute, with each dialogue involving one character from the previous dialogue, until the circle comes back round to the prostitute. Highly controversial, it provoked not only one of the largest scandals in German theatre as well as several anti-semitic riots, but it was also suppressed by the Austrian censors as well as the Prussian Ministry of culture. The scandal led to a six day obscenity trial; Schnitzler was acquitted of the charges, however he banned all further performances in Europe until after his death. BMC, XXII, 666 (1st English ed.).

Original wrappers printed in red and black backed with tape at an early date; wrappers chipped on edges, otherwise a wonderful copy with an excellent interior and very wide margins. Preserved in a contemporary calf-backed cloth case, author, title and date on the spine in gilt.

First edition, third thousand (stated). Though she began her career writing poetry and children's stories, Sara Jane Lippincott (1823-1904) later became the first paid female reporter for the New York Times. It was probably while on assignment for this publication that she wrote the letters that now make up the present volume, following her "Grand Tour" journey through Great Britain, France, Italy, and Bavaria.

First edition of Cronin's first novel, the story of an arrogant and cruel hat-maker who struggles for social acceptance. It was made into a motion picture in 1942, starring Robert Newton, Deborah Kerr and James Mason. The Scottish born Cronin (1896-1981) earned his M.D. from the University of Glasgow. After a few years, he gave up practice due to the unexpected success of this, his first book Hatter's castle, which enabled him to write full time.
