Description:
Much of the correspondence in the volume has to do with the difficulties of governing the new territory of California in the immediate aftermath of the Mexican-American War, followed by the California gold rush. A long letter from Col. R. H. Mason (pages 504-512) details a trip in August 1848 from Monterey to San Francisco and onto the Sacramento gold fields. "We reached San Francisco on the 20th, and found that all, or nearly all, its male population had gone to the mines." Many of these letters rushed back to Washington bear the notation "A true copy: W. T. Sherman, First Lieutenant 3d Artillery, A. A. A. General." This copy is stamped surplus from the U.S. House of Representatives Library. Binding remains tight.

Description:
Andy Warhal and Gerard Malanga curated this collection, which was published very much on the cheap in 1968 by Toad Press in Eugene, Oregon. There are 114 poems and writings by various contributors. The text is printed throughout in black ink with some pieces accompanied by halftone photographic portraits, printed in either full blue, pink, purple, or black ink. This copy is in fragile condition, but it is complete. The spine's adhesive binding has failed and the paper -- highly acidic newsprint -- has become dark and brittle.
