New York: James Connors' Sons, [1885]. First edition. Folio (9 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches). 62 leaves (including 3 in color). Publisher's black cloth with gilt cover lettering, gray endpapers. Front tips bumped to exposure. Recased retaining the original endpapers. A very nice copy of a rare item. Romaine p. 216 also list 62 leaves and with only one location. We could find no copy listed on OCLC. The entire catalog is concerned with ornaments and borders, many quite beautiful. Description:
San Francisco: Book Club of California, 2009. First edition of this first biography of J. M. Hutchings. One of 500 copies. Large quarto. xv, [1, illustration], 324, [2, blank], [1, colophon], [1] pp. Profusely illustrated throughout and all of the illustrations are in actual colors. Publisher's quarter brown cloth over green cloth, gilt spine lettering, printed paper cover label, color pictorial endpapers after a Yosemite lithograph by Andrew Melrose. An excellent copy. A much needed and exhaustive work, this publication went out of print soon after publication. It is about evenly divided between the biography and the bibliography. Hutchings was arguably Yosemite's most vocal and powerful champion. Hutchings, a failed prospector and budding publisher, came to Yosemite Valley in 1855 after reading Lafayette Bunnell's descriptions of its waterfalls. His illustrated publication, Hutchings' California Magazine, did more than anything else to bring the valley's beauty to the attention of the world. He… Read More

Description:
Japan: N.p., [ca. 1910]. Oblong octavo (8 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches) with a total of 25 stiff leaves mounted to stubs. Each leaf has a window on each side, all bearing original photographs or early postcards. All windows have printed floral borders. There is total of 23 original albumen and silver gelatin photographs (many hand-colored) and 27 very early Japanese postcards (again some with hand coloring). Contemporary padded burgundy morocco with gilt cover lettering, floral endpapers. A few of the window frames with a tear, rear joint of album starting but still strong. An unusual gathering of material. The majority of the photographs are of women and most of them are hand colored. The two most interesting postcards of battle scenes from the Russo-Japan war with captions in English and Japanese. There is also a rather rare photograph of Yoshiwara, the famous prostitute section of Tokyo. The women in Yoshiwara are all behind bars (as usual). There are a couple of books about Yoshiwara but precious few… Read More

Description:
Tokyo: K. Ogawa, 1904. First edition. Oblong quarto (10 x 7 inches). Unpaginated and bound in the Japanese style. This title commences with a color woodblock folding illustration and it followed by 41 full page color woodblock illustrations of wedding preparations and ceremonies in various parts of Japan and is followed 22 pp. of text in English describing the actions illustrated in the plates. Colophon is on the inner rear wrapper. Publisher's string tied color pictorial wrappers. Front with a repaired top corner, a crease and some rubbing and rounding to the lower corner. Six of the plates show the different ways to dress one's hair. The "Old" ceremony discussed in the text is for a Daimyo's (Prince's) wedding and the remainder sheds light on the "New" aspects of the ceremony. While not so very rare in the trade OCLC does not record a single copy. Baxley's Stamps surmises that Mrrs. Curizuka was responsible for printing the plates while Ogawa printed the text. All text is in English and place… Read More

Description:
New York: (Privately printed), 1937. First edition. Folio (10 1/2 x 14 inches). 62, 93, index), (1) pp. Four pages (including title page) bear text, the remainder are packed with numerous photographs of all the famous patrons of this infamous New York institution. Publisher's blue cloth with white cover lettering, zebra-pattern endpapers. Some wear to extremities and a small split to the cloth at midway on the front joint, title page with mild foxing. A clean and attractive copy overall. The chief attraction to this book lies primarily in the photographs; we find Errol Flynn, Gloria Vanderbilt, Johnny Walker, Prince Serge Obolensky, Jack Dempsey, Prince Guido Colonna, Ginger Rogers and Jose Prado all rubbing elbows and having a fine time. The prohibition brought together, here at the El Morocco for likely the first time in American history, the blue-bloods and the nouveaux riche. An unthinkable proposition merely 20 years prior. Actors, athletes, models and suchlike usually wouldn't have dared to… Read More
