Raleigh, N.C.: John Spelman, Printer to the State, 1861. Octavo, 240, iv, 268, iv pp, original quarter light brown calf with dark brown cloth over boards, gilt and morocco spine label. Confederate imprint. Covers the "Second Extra Session" of the North Carolina assembly, held in August and September, 1861, during which the body discussed financing and fighting the war and passed the Militia Law of North Carolina. This copy inscribed by Thomas Settle to front pastedown and stamped "Settle" to spine; Settle was a state supreme court justice and a founder of the North Carolina Republican party. During the Civil War he fought for a year on the Confederate side but after the war became dedicated to the cause of reconstruction, helping to found the state Republican party in 1867. Foxing and toning to pages, wear to covers, leather dry, spine ends chipped and discolored with some loss to leather, front cover detaching and held on by binding cords.
