Description:
New York: American Missionary Society, 1920. Very good.. 8pp. Pictorial self-wrappers, stapled. Small perforation at upper left corner. Even tanning. An ephemeral piece of pro-Japanese propaganda, published by the American Missionary Society during the early 1920s when limitations on immigration to the United States from Japan were eventually put into place. The pamphlet purports to be an interview with "Kiyoshi," pictured on the front wrapper, a second-generation Japanese American born in San Francisco and an Army volunteer during World War I. The interview stresses the values of hard work and honesty supposedly inherent in Japanese families, and implies that success of Kiyoshi's family in the United States was amplified by their conversion to Christianity. The pamphlet concludes by stating: "There is no force which makes for true assimilation and Americanization as the transforming power of Christianity.... Anti-Japanese legislation works injustice and hardships on them and only complicates the… Read More

Description:
Mexico: Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1892. About very good.. Broadside, approximately 15.5 x 12 inches. Light edge wear and a few small chips. Light toning and dust soiling. A scarce popular news broadside, illustrated by José Guadalupe Posada, that relates the "ultimas noticias" concerning the imprisonment and impending execution of Jesús Bruno Martinez, a member of the notorious late 19th-century Mexican gang, "La Profesa." In 1892, the gang robbed a jewelry store in Mexico City, in the course of which Martinez fatally stabbed the jeweler. His trial, conviction, and execution aroused great public interest, and the various stages of his case, including an attempted escape from the Belen prison in San Juan de Ulúa, were the subject of several Arroyo-Posada news sheets. The present broadside carries a sharply printed Posada woodcut that depicts Martinez remonstrating with himself in his prison, supposedly ("mas ó menos") after being informed of the rejection of the appeal against his death sentence.… Read More

Description:
Mexico City: January 5, 1829. Very good.. Broadside, 12 x 8.25 inches. Light wear, center horizontal fold, pinholes along left edge. A rare decree issued by Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil, Governor of the Federal District, attempting to regulate the disbursement and possession of guns in Mexico in 1829. Tornel notes that in recent times, weapons belonging to the army have been "misplaced" around Mexico City. Collecting the weapons is "extremely urgent, because the destiny of these weapons is to serve internal tranquility and the defense of the republic against external enemies." The order reserves the right of access to weapons for those "enlisted in the permanent, active, or local militia." Tornel authorizes the commanding general and local militia leaders to collect weapons held by civilians without a license to carry them. The bottom of the decree is signed in type by Tornel and his secretary. The presidential election of September 1, 1828 saw Guerrero come in second. Two weeks later Santa Anna… Read More

Monterrey: June 4, 1836. About very good.. Printed broadside, approximately 8.5 x 8.5 inches. Trimmed at lower edge, with no loss of text. Shallow, one-inch section torn away at lower edge, also not affecting text. Contemporary manuscript rubric. Light tanning and creasing. A scarce broadside dated June 4, 1836, in which the Governor of Nuevo Leon, Juan Nepomuceno de la Garza, announces the capture of Santa Anna by the Texans to his citizens. "Though [the first] announcement of Santa Anna's capture was made on May 19, it was known to the Mexican government at least as early as May 15, on which day Tornel wrote to Filosola acknowledging the latter's despatch of April 25 giving the news" -- Streeter. Thus, word of developments first traveled to Mexico City and then emanated to the states, with the result that this broadside did not announce the fate of Santa Anna until over a month after the fact, even though the state practically borders Texas. Huatusco: May 31, 1847. Very good.. Broadside decree, 17.5 x 11 inches. Printed on lined paper. Previously folded, with a couple of very small losses at central fold. Minor wear at edges. Light dust soiling and toning. A rare broadside decree that establishes guidelines for the collection of funds and donations for guerillas and their families continuing the fight against the American invasion around Veracruz in 1847. The important port city had fallen two months prior, and Santa Anna was routed at Cerro Gerro taken by Winfield Scott a month earlier. All that was left for Mexican forces in the region was sustained guerilla harassment of the American army. In this decree, a separate account from regular government monies is established for funds raised, and various government departments of the state of Veracruz are ordered to encourage donations and to publicize contributions, and children are even encouraged to contribute food to the soldiers. A desperate plea for a desperate situation; dated May… Read More

Mexico: Test. de A. Vanegas Arroyo, 1910. Very good.. Broadside, approximately 16 x 10.75 inches. A couple of small nicks at edges. Light toning and dust soiling. A scarce sheet of Mexican paper game pieces featuring illustrations by José Guadalupe Posada. "Although the rules are not given, this game appears to be a type of draw game similar to the French 'jeu de lonterie.' Here a sheet containing a number of small images is cut into individual squares, which are then drawn from a hat and matched up with corresponding numbered pieces. The 'juego de lotería' has, like its French counterpart, a pedagogical value in that it associates the names and pictures of familiar animals, symbols, and persons. Images from Mexican folklore, like the calavera, diablo, and coyote, are notable inclusions" -- Tyler. A scarce survivor; we locate just a small number of intact copies. Tyler, Posada's Mexico 74.

[San Antonio]: Jules A. Appler, 1940. Very good.. Large sheet map, 41.5 x 29.25 inches. Printed in black, green, and red. Old folds, some slight splitting at folds. Minor wear and soiling. A scarce, large-format map of San Antonio, Texas, capturing the city at the beginning of its World War II boom. This is perhaps the last work published by Jules A. Appler, a property developer who issued many of the city's most popular maps and directories over a 50-year period. Appler was active between 1890 and 1940, creating many of the most popular maps recording life in San Antonio over two generations of dramatic growth. This substantial map showcases all of San Antonio and its immediate environs. The city is shown centered upon the old town with its circular canal on the San Antonio River, with the Alamo nearby. Several railway lines converge on the center of the city, highlighting San Antonio's history as a transportation hub. A visually-arresting poster created for a Juneteenth musical celebration and parade in San Francisco in 1984. The central visual of the poster is a reproduced portrait of a famous image of Isom Dart, described here as "Outlaw, Gunfighter, Gang Leader, Cattlerustler, Community Protector." The eight bands playing the event were the Johnny Hartsman Blues Band, Demons of the Mind, Mystic Youth & I Skeeda, All the Kings Men, The Champion Band, Stellar, Imani, and the Galaxy Show Band. The event, touted as an "Emancipation Celebration," took place over two weekend days in June at the San Francisco Rodeo. The bottom of the poster states that the event was "Partially funded by the San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund."
