A charming leporello or concertina-style binding, with 24 hand-coloured and glazed plates depicting images of soldiers and officers - many mounted on horseback. Small, measures approximately 16.5 cm x 11.5 cm closed, 16.5 cm x 262 cm when fully opened out. 1/4 cloth. Plates in VG clean condition, the binding Good but shaken/loose, with tears to the cloth along the edge of the backstrip. Owner name to front pastedown but remarkably clean and entirely free from foxing etc. No textual input other than occasional descriptive comments below the plates. A lovely item and quite scarce.

Ivor Nicholson & Watson, 1936. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Poor. First Impression of the First UK edition. Original black cloth with faded white titles at the spine. pp. 431. An important novel at the time in which the author - whose previous books had been burned by the Nazis in a formal ceremony - portrays Nazism as an epidemic and criticizes Hitler an a Hysteric. Now a rare book in any condition, this copy is reasoanble - bumped at the corners and pushed at the spine tips. Off-setting from the flaps to the endpapers. The top-edge is darkened and dust-stained, the other edges (of the block) browned and a trifle grubby. A tight and square copy, howeve, and free from owner names or library markins etc. The dustjacket has numerous chips at the spine ends and corners, some internal sellotape repairs and the rear panel is stained and browned. Poor condition jacket but it is not price-clipped and the illustration at the front cover is striking. Scarce item.

A nice copy, evenly toned block but appears to be unread with no creases to the spine.

Paris, 1868. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First Editions, 7 volumes published between 1868 and 1873. A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. George Allen & Unwin, 1957. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 2nd Impression of the first edition, published in the same month as the first impression (March 1957). A second EDITION was published in 1980. Black cloth covers with silver titles at the spine and black top edge. pp. 297. A very clean copy - no owner names, forxing or spotting. The binding is straight and fairly tight. Minor pushing to spine tips, the corners are not bumped. Starting to crack in a couple of places but this is a Good to VG condition copy. The strikingly illustrated dustjacket is unclipped but shelf-worn at the extremities, particularly the crown which is frayed. Some staining to the rear panel. A Good dustjacket, certainly. Scarce in contemporary hardcover.

London: Harper Collins, 1991. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Text-block toned, minor dust-marking to top edge, pushed at the spine tips. Reasonably square and tight, however. The dustjacket is unclipped, rubbed at the corners and there is some bleed from the red cloth to the inside - also a possible spillage stain. Not visible from the outside, though and still presents well (see accompanying iimage). SIGNED by the author at the title page, uncommon thus.

Lausanne: Mermod , 1927. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine. Bischoff, Henry. Although published in 1926 in a French magazine, this is the first French-language edition in book form. Translated by M. Sachs and with a preface by Jean Cocteau. Illustrated with woodcuts by Henry Bischoff including 6 plates coloured by hand. The edition was limited to only 262 copies, of which 30 were hors commerce, 20 of these being printed on Auvergne a la cuve and numbered in Roman numerals from xii to xxxi. This is one such example. Full leather gilt with raised bands at the spine and decorated, colour-dyed covers, t.e.g and elaborate decorations to the pastedowns, untrimmed. An extraordinary contemporary binding in decorative slipcase with leather trim at the fore-edges. The original green wrappers are bound-in and thus perfectly preserved.
