The journey included stops at Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, and the Crozet Islands, where the vessel ultimately met its demise. The survivors managed to endure by subsisting on sea elephants, penguins, and seabirds until they were rescued by the American ship Philo. They requested to be left on St. Paul Island, where they remained for three months before being picked up and taken to Tasmania. This tale of shipwreck gained popularity and was published in multiple editions. Contains 2 plates and a frontispiece where the author is depicted as a contemporary Robinson Crusoe, clad in sealskin attire, carrying a brace of birds, surrounded by king penguins, with a towering ice mountain in the background. Description:
This is the 4th printing of William Morris utopian novel, 'News From Nowhere', printed in March 1892. The First edition was printed a year earlier in march of 1891. In the novel, the narrator, William Guest, falls asleep after a Socialist League meeting and awakens in a future society characterized by common ownership and democratic control of production. In this society, there is no private property, large cities, authority, monetary system, marriage or divorce, courts, prisons, or class distinctions. It is an agrarian society that functions smoothly because people derive pleasure from nature and, therefore, from their work. Very Good Condition. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Exlibris plate to front pastedown. Binding is firm. Pages are clean with light tanning and foxing. More pronounced foxing to title page. Boards are clean with minor wear. Slightly bumped corners and fraying to spine ends. More notable scratches and general marks to rear board.
