The spine and top of the front board are faded and there is a little loss at the head of the spine. Internally clean and crisp.

The lower board with a small patch of insect damage to the leather. Several ownership inscriptions from the seventeenth century onwards. Apocalypsis has its own title page and pagination and contains seventeen engraved portraits. The Apocalypsis was translated into English by John Davies. A very good copy. ESTC R16929.

First Newton edition. Contemporary mottled calf, worn. Both volumes rebacked at some time, joints now cracking. Replacement endpapers. Some offset from portrait and light toning of the paper in the text block area in Vol. I. Volume I contains Newton's Dedication of his edition to William Pulteney, Earl of Bath, Preface, Life of Milton, gratulatory verses by Barrow and Marvell, Addison's Critique and the Subscriber List. Newton attempted to to re-establish Milton's text free from accumulated errors and his remained the standard edition for the next 150 years.

Light waterstain to first two and final two leaves, otherwise a good sound copy. Written as a sequel to 'A Visit to Paris in 1814'. Both are seminal texts on the collapse of Napoleon's empire and the events surrounding Waterloo. The author was a Radical journalist and travel writer, killed in a duel in 1821.

Paper browned in signature X. A very good copy. Despite the wording of the title, the poems are original work by Fox, not translations.

The colophon states Ultrajecti, typis Johannis Stuyvesant. Contemporary blind ruled vellum binding with a neat ink title on the spine which has an old vellum repair at the foot. The paper shows some edge browning but the text block is otherwise clean and tight. Book label of William Waples of Sunderland and loosely inserted a letter dated 1949 from Michael Stein to Waples regarding masonic symbolism in the text.

Spine with raised bands, lettered in second and third panels. Other panels infilled with delicate foliage sprays made up from individual tools. Spine faded to a mellow brown and some spotting of the endpapers, otherwise a very nice binding.
