Johannesburg: Oxford University Press for University of the Witwatersrand, 1937. 1st ed. . Blue Cloth. Good-VG. 14.5 Cm x 22.5 Cm. xiv+328, num.tables, histograms etc.; Pietmaritzburg bookseller's sm.label bottom fr.pastedown, thin strip of marginal browning to last 5 leaves and recto rear endpaper where it spreads to become light foxing across top and outer margin - mostly very faint though, otherwise clean, tight & unmarked internally; covers generally clean, top.sp.sl.rubbed, bottom more so. Despite faults, which do not really amount to much, a very acceptable copy nudging VG rating. Uncommon outside South Africa, this was an important and, for the time, highly enlightened work in which MacCrone advanced a 'frontier hypothesis' to explain rabid racism and invoked Freudian concepts where appropriate, in some ways an anticipation of the 'authoritarian personality' concept.

Description:
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1939. 1st reprint month of Publication . Pamphlet. Good. 12 Cms x 18.5 Cms. 32 pp. Oxford Pamhlets on World Affairs No.5. Tight & clean internally, covers clean but a little rubbed & worn at corners. Largely derived from the book We Europeans, which Huxley produced with A.C. Haddon, this pamphlet strove to distil the case against the meaningful divisibility of the European population into 'races' , attacking the notion of an 'Aryan' race and anti-semitism. Significant little historical document. Note: quoted non-UK shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range.

New York: Alfred A.Knopf, 1951. 1st ed. (as stated verso t.p.) . Grey Cloth. Fine/VG. 14.5 Cm x 21.5 Cm. xi+605+vi (index); can see no reason for rating this less than fine - clean, tight, bright, unmarked etc.; unclipped jacket generally clean with only hints of top edge rubbing, spine and top front slightly sun-faded but this hardly shows against yellow paper (will add protective sleeve when ordered). An important and remarkably broad collection of texts providing an overview of the issue on the eve of the Civil Rights campaign. Authos represneted include Ralph Bunche, W.I.Thomas, Kurt Lewin, Horace Cayton, Frenkel-Brunswik,Guy Johnson, Cooley, Robert Park, Bogardus and W.E.Du Bois. Coverage is not confined to African Americans - native Americans, Jews, Hispanics, Mexicans, Chinese, French Canadians and Puerto Ricans are all the concern of at least one reading. Description:
New York: Whittleley House, 1931. 1st ed. . Black Cloth. Fine-/No Jacket (none Issued?). 14 Cms x 20.5 Cms. xiv+259, 17 text figs; small name stamp top front endpaper, traces of dust to top edge of textblock, otherwise clean, tight & unmarked in clean unworn covers (small black smudge btoom outer end of textblock). Long overlooked this is actually a crucial work marking the turning point in the attitude of mainstream US psychology to the 'race differences' notion; written by the most prolific of the researchers on the topic during the 1920s it actually concludes, contrary to what the subtitle might suggest, that they cannot be proved to exist - Garth in effect throws in the towel here. No copies in UK and most US copies ex-lib. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range.
