Additional incidental carved vignettes appear as chapter footers and historiated caps.** This seems to be a printer or binder's dummy, based on differences seen to other copies. Ours has a gilt tooled paper label, which seems to have been rejected in the end for the use of blind tooling to the front board. Secondly, there is a partial,… Read More

Description:
Newburyport, MA: Parker River Researchers, 1989 Hard cover, 16mo., (measuring 5 x 7 1/2 inches) in gray buckram with silver titles, 272 pp. This is the reprinted, abridged version of the 1927 Macy-Masius Publishers issue. The Rev. Samuel Sewall (1652-1730) kept a diary for more than fifty years, detailing life as a printer, minister and judge of in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His family settled in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1661. His main claim to fame, however, was as a member of the Court of Oyer and Terminer, which in 1692 oversaw the Salem witch trials, acts of which he later came to repent. The diary is compared to that of Samuel Pepys by the editor, and is certainly filled with mention of some of the big names of the day: Governor Winthrop, Cotton Mather et al. But equally fascinating are his observations of the everyday hardships, illnesses and early death, child mortality, and spiritual struggles of his own family and those of his neighbors. " His relations with his wife and their… Read More

New York: Heritage Press, 1935 Presumed Reprint. Hard cover, 8vo, in slipcase, red cloth, blind stamped with vignette initial "A "design top board, with additional blind stamp to spine, with titles blocked in gold. The frontispiece has a color illustration by the Chicago-trained graphic artist William Addison Dwiggins, (1880-1956) signed in pencil by the artist. After a stint at the Lakeside Press, Dwiggins continued his career in the Boston area, designing quite a few typefaces, doing commercial work, and book design for firms including the Merrymount Press. Salem, Massachusetts-born novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) penned this fictional classic of Puritan patriarchal morality at odds with the life choices of the young Hester Prynne and her adulterous love-child. She is tormented both by her community, and an elusive husband, who rather than openly reuniting with his estranged wife, becomes obsessed with identifying her lover. Originally published in 1850.
