Description:
Boston: Museum of Fine Arts (Boston). Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1961. Booklet. Light crease at the spine of the front cover. ; A humorous tale of a crow or raven who successively, page after page, drinks and drains numerous glasses of spirits until its view of the world blurs, it stands, then falls on its back. Told wordlessly, with drawings only, and the story line is obvious. The stylized head and beak of the bird reoccur in Steinlen's book illustrations of crows and vultures. Swiss-born, creative polymath Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) was painter, fabric designer, sculptor, periodical publisher, printmaker, and illustrator. Renowned for his turn-of-the-century, Art Nouveau-style, Steinlen produced drawings of Parisian street life, depicting average working-class people, actors, vendors, prostitutes, the upper class out of their element, criminals, and families, all in the urban environment. He was equally known for his many drawings of cats in both natural…

No Place Stated: The Golden Bough Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1930. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. The free endpapers have a slight curl, likely from the marbling process. Spine and joints slightly darker than the rest of the leather. Minor rubbing to the joints, cover paper abraded where it wraps under the tail edge of the rear board, corners bumped with wear through to the boards.; Daudet's novel of the personal failings and stumbling, lurching relationship of a young Southern French student Jean Gaussin and his older Parisian lover Fanny Legrand. Jean is troubled by Fanny's life of luxury from many profitable, personal relationships: an engineer, a poet, an engraver, and a sculptor who had her pose for his statue of Sappho. After their living in the country and his dalliance with a young woman, it all falls apart. In the end, Fanny leaves him with little but a letter and he's right to lament his "...broken, wasted life, all wrecked and tearful... From…

New York: Privately Printed. Near Fine in Good dust jacket. 1930. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. Slight abrasion to head edge of front pastedown. Slightest rubbing to spine ends. Ink stamp to rear endpaper. Lacks the publisher's slipcase. Dust jacket chipped at head and tail edges, split along spine, but together in a paper-backed mylar jacket.; This is Gaius Petronius Arbiter's classic satire of the extremes of amoral 'bro culture' in ancient Rome. Copy 625 of 1200 of this edition, "privately printed" during a time of US censorship. The origins of the text are vague, but are believed to be the work of Gaius Petronius Arbiter, Roman Emperor Nero's advisor on matters of taste, fashion, luxury, and extravagance. This book is his satirical retelling of the self-indulgent extremes of immoral living. The manuscript was fragmented, not contiguous, and there are only assumptions about what fragments may be missing and how they linked the known fragments. This…

No Place Stated: A. R. Tommasini. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Bump to head of spine, possibly in the making. Light toning to the very edges of the boards, common to this edition.; A selection of verse fragments from John Greenleaf Whittier's classic Snow-Bound : A Winter Idyl. Printer Tommy Tommasini chose fragments that described scenes that the family in this narrative poem would have witnessed. Whittier's poem, in total, describes a family's conversations inside a snowed-in New England farmhouse. The verse fragments are accompanied by the linoleum engravings of Czech-born artist George Kuthan. His Prague and Paris studies in graphic arts, printmaking, and painting served him in Canada where he taught printmaking at university level, and incorporated etching and both wood- and linoleum-engraving into his graphic arts and books. His works in this book are sympathetic to the verse fragments and are boldly styled. One of an unnumbered,…

Williamsburg, Virginia: Printing Office Of The Williamsburg Foundation. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1972. Softcover. Written as a tract to inform Delegates to the Continental Congress, the Summary View impressed some Delegates sufficiently that they had it printed as a pamphlet by Clementina Rind, the only woman printer in Williamsburg. In this tract, Jefferson's eloquently expressed grievances against King George III and Parliament showed his compositional skill and were instrumental in his being selected to write the Declaration of Independence. This facsimile edition was set in Caslon type and letterpress printed and bound by the Printing and Post Office, Williamsburg, Virginia. On fine, cream paper. As with other copies we've handled, the type was deeply struck by an enthusiastic printer. Comprised of three gathers, side stitched with what appears to be flax twine or cord.
