Description:
New York, 1882. Good.. [8]pp. Quarto. Printed on a single folded sheet. Closed tear at fore-edge, partially repaired with tape; a few separations along folds. Light tanning; light foxing at edges. A nice example of this Congregational missionary newsletter published weekly in New York, most interesting for its printing of a translation of "The Sweet By-And-By" into Chinese on the front cover. The internal matter includes a sermon, Bible lesson, missionary news, and several parables and historical anecdotes. Congregationalist missionaries were very active amongst Chinese immigrant populations on both coasts, and the present piece provides an interesting message of inclusion just after the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in Congress.

Description:
[Most likely Baton Rouge or New Orleans, La, 1865. Very good.. Printed broadside, 14.25 x 6.25 inches, with text printed in two columns inside a decorative border. Old folds, even toning, minor foxing and creasing, small marginal chip to left margin. A Civil War commemorative poem in forty quatrains memorializing the Battles of Sabine Cross Roads (April 8, 1864) and Pleasant Hill (April 9, 1864), two important battles of the Red River Campaign in which Union forces failed to take Shreveport. After being routed on the first day of the battle by Richard Taylor's Confederate forces, Nathaniel Banks retreated and held his ground the following day, with the 77th Illinois playing a crucial role. The first verse of the present poem begins: "'Twas on the eighth of April, Eighteen sixty-four, A day to be remembered, By the Thirteenth Army Corps." The poem is signed in type at the end by its author, "Billy R.M., Fifer Co. C, 77th Illinois Vols."OCLC records two copies of the present broadside, at the Abraham… Read More

Description:
[Cary, Ill, 1960. Very good.. Approximately [50]pp. of typescript material, forty original photographs, plus numerous printed ephemera. Housed in a quarto three-ring binding in plastic sleeves. Light tanning. Minor wear at some edges. A terrific agricultural service and training manual, which compiles advertisements, forms, service techniques, and instructional documents for "herd technicians" of the Curtiss Breeding Service, founded after World War II and based in Cary, Illinois. "Herd Technician" was a euphemism for traveling salesman and artificial inseminator, whose principal capacities were to obtain orders for Curtiss brand frozen bull semen and to provide breeding services to local farm herds in his area. The company was founded by Otto Schnering, who first owned a large midwestern candy company, but transferred much of his interest to agriculture during World War II. The typed introduction to this manual reads, in part: "In 1942 Mr. Schnering purchased some farms north of Chicago and… Read More

Light wear and scuffing to boards and spine ends. Light toning and dust soiling internally. An attractive bound volume of twelve scarce Mexican devotional booklets from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. An interesting sammelband of scarce Mexican devotional material, whose list of contents is as follows:1) Dia Veinte y Uno Consagrado al Culto del Angélico Joven San Luis Gonzaga. Description:
[Mexico City, 1876. About very good.. Twenty-four pamphlets in one volume, with paginations as noted below. 16mo. Rebound in modern pebbled calf, with original gilt leather spine laid down. Moderate tanning and some dust soiling. Five works lacking title pages. An extensive sammelband of nearly twenty-five scarce novenas, triduas, prayer books, and other devotionals printed in Mexico during the 19th century. At least sixteen of the imprints emanate from the presses of the Abadiano y Valdez publishing family, which held a prominent role in the production of popular devotional works across the 1800s. The most prolific of these printers was Luis Abadiano y Valdez, who published a number of educational and political works, but the vast majority of his output was religious, and the present sammelband provides a good representation of some of his scarcer imprints produced in the 1840s and 1850s. Also included in this tract volume are a sizable number of imprints by his successor, Francisco Abadiano, who… Read More

Mexico City, 1880. Very good.. Three separate imprints bound together; individual details below. Small octavo. Contemporary half Mexican calf and marbled paper-covered boards, gilt spine titles. Minor wear and rubbing to edges and boards, corners bumped and a bit frayed. Scattered minor foxing to text, a few leaves toned. A fantastic sammelband of Mexican agricultural "theoretical-practical manuals" featuring information and illustrations on roosters, hens, poultry, pigs, cattle, dogs, and other farm animals. Each work focuses not only on the animals themselves but on the methods to achieve "profitable breeding." The works are detailed as follows: 1) Manual Teorico Practico para la Cria Lucrativa del Gallo y de la Gallina en Cuanto Tiene Relacion.... Mexico City: Imprenta de J.M. Description:
Lagos, 1893. Good plus.. Eight works in one, varying paginations (see below). Contemporary quarter sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt. Moderate wear to spine and edges, boards rubbed. Occasional underlining in red pencil. Moderate tanning. A neat sammelband of seven short works and one longer essay by Agustin Rivera, a Mexican polymath and prolific author of the late-19th century. Rivera was a priest, historian, theologian, philosopher, and grammarian, amongst other pastimes, and published nearly two hundred works during his career on a smorgasbord of subjects. He perhaps singlehandedly sustained the career of the local printer in Lagos de Moreno, Rivera's home town; the body of work in OCLC published by Ausencio Lopez Arce, who printed all the works present here, consists almost exclusively of writings by Rivera. The lengthiest piece included here is an extended essay that ponders the use of philosophy to the uneducated classes -- in this case, women, natives, everyday businessmen, and artisans.… Read More

San Antonio: Adolf Douai, 1855. Very good.. [4]pp. Large folio. Previously folded. Contemporary ownership inscription at head of title. Light foxing and creasing. A scarce December 1855 issue of this socialist, abolitionist German Texas newspaper, the San Antonio Zeitung, "Ein sozial-demokratisches Blatt für die Deutschen in West-Texas." "The San Antonio Zeitung... began weekly publication as San Antonio's first German-language newspaper on July 1, 1853, under the editorship of C. D. Adolph Douai, a German-born scholar, teacher, and social reformer. The newspaper, written largely in German, was aimed at the large German population in San Antonio and the surrounding region. In a prospectus Douai announced that the Zeitung would regard every political question from the viewpoint of social progress. He published the free-soil platform adopted by the Texas State Convention of Germans in 1854 and in a series of editorials attacked the institution of slavery as an evil incompatible with democratic… Read More

San Antonio: J.R. Wood Printing Co, 1920. About very good.. Broadside, 25 x 18.75 inches. Printed in red and black. Previously folded. Light chipping and wear at edges; very marginal mat burn. Short perforation at center left, not affecting printed areas. Light tanning. A quite attractive and scarce promotional poster for the San Fernando Addition in south San Antonio. The addition was laid out circa 1920, and appears on an Appler map of the city in that year; it was bounded by South Flores and South Nogales on its east and west sides respectively in an area today that is rather roughly bisected by the intersection of the 35 and 410 interstate highways. A low-angled, bird's-eye view of the city shows the then rural landscape where the addition was located, with the city rising in the background. A street map that occupies much of the lower half of the broadside shows the location of Sen Fernando Addition with respect to the center of San Antonio. Description:
San Francisco: Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1906. Very good.. 229,[3]pp., plus four leaves of advertisements printed on colored paper. Publisher's brown printed wrappers. Minor creasing and edge wear to wrappers, tiny chip to bottom corner of front wrapper. Minor occasional foxing to text, about half of final leaf, comprising advertisements, lacking. Otherwise a nice survival. The first complete telephone directory published after the monumental 1906 San Francisco earthquake and resulting conflagration that consumed and destroyed much of the city. Two temporary directories were printed after the disaster, the first issued on May 12; its supplement was issued May 26. Both of the temporary directories are extremely scarce, as is the present work. Interestingly, as some mention of the 1906 earthquake and fire were printed in the temporary directories, the present work does not dwell on recent events, but is a rather straightforward phone directory. This perhaps speaks to the… Read More

Mexico: Imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1905. About very good.. Broadsheet, approximately 15 x 11.75 inches. Trimmed slightly close at foot. A few scattered, small wormholes, not affecting text. Light toning and dust soiling. Scarce broadsheet that features a large, wood-engraved illustration of St. Jude (Judas Thaddeus) by José Guadalupe Posada and published by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo. The image shows Jude in full-length portrait, standing in a field before a rural town and church, and holding a bible and carpenter's square. The verso carries two additional, smaller woodcuts, and prints a text that relates two miracles effected by St. Jude and the Holy Infant of Atocha in the state of Coahuila. St. Jude, the primary subject of the broadsheet, is traditionally venerated as the patron of the poor and of lost causes, but more recently in Mexico has been adopted by narcotraficantes and gang members. We must all pitch in and boost for our athletic teams; our debaters -- if we have any -- our musical organizations; and last, but not least, we must all boost for 'The Sandburr.'" Description:
Tokyo, 1929. About very good.. 249pp. Original drab printed wrappers. Spine lightly toned and chipped, light soiling and wear to covers. Inscribed on title page, contemporary ink notation on rear endpapers. First edition. A collection of essays originally published in the Japanese American News; the author worked for the Los Angeles branch of the newspaper. The essays, most quite short and some comprised of just a few lines of poetry, offer observations on Japanese-American life and culture. Content is personal commentary rather than journalistic reporting, but does include one poem about smuggling people over the U.S.-Mexico border (p.65). Others address the second generation Nisei. We note that the author's name is transliterated differently in several places and is, quite possibly, a pseudonym. The present copy is inscribed on the title page, possibly by the author. We note two copies in OCLC at the National Diet Library and Waseda University. JANM Bibliography, 216. A Buried Past, 677.
