Amsterdam: Halcyon, 1942. Softcover. Good. Softcover. [IN DUTCH] Sjoerd Hendrik (S.H.) de Roos (1877-1962), was a Dutch type designer and book cover designer. He was inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement. He is best known for the design of a new type face, the Hollandsche Mediæval. In total, he designed twelve type faces. In 1926, he founded the Heuvelpers, a small printing house with a hand press set up in his home in Hilversum. Here he created the stamps and dies of a new 14-point letter, called Hawthorn, to be used exclusively for the publications of the Heuvelpers. A. A. M. Stols was a Dutch printer and publisher, known for his collection of limited editions of Dutch poetry. This short work is from a monograph to be published by NV Lettergieterij, Amsterdam. n.p., 1928. Very Good. Interesting samples of Czech printing fom the early 20th century. One is a large bifold done by Vojtech Preissig dated 1925. Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, designer, illustrator, painter and teacher. Printed on light tan paper about 9 x 11 inches. It includes a line engraving. The other two samples are from Cesky Bibliofil, an important Czech annual devoted to book design, typography, and the graphic arts. Each is bifold measuring 6.75 x 9.25 inches. One of the samples has a tear and abrasion over line four of the text while the other is in fine condition. EPHEM/052523.

It also includes a new introductory essay by Singer titled "The Making of the First Book." Noted artist Ira Moskowitz created ten original copperplate etchings and forty drawings for the text. There were 475 copies for sale of this compelling production, all signed by the author and artist and for which the artist pencil signed the ten etchings. This is number 58 of 75 copies specially bound in half Chieftain morocco and burgundy Dutch cloth with gold tooling. She was the daughter of a professor and accompanied him to St. Petersburg, where she studied languages and science. There she married Émile Durand, a French law professor. They returned to France in 1872. Gréville initially published novels in St. Petersburg journals. She continued to write in France, with the novels Dosia (1876) and L'Expiation de Savéli (1876), depicting Russian society. This copy is the English translation of L'Expiation de Savéli, published in the United States in 1878. VERY SCARCE. Small 8vo.
