Description:
London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd,, 1935. First edition, first impression, in the attractive dust jacket. This ethnographic work is the result of the time the Culwicks spent living with the Bena tribe in south-central Tanzania. The Bena first migrated into the highlands of southern Iringa Region (Njombe District) in the early 1800s. In the 1860s some groups migrated down into the river lands of south-western Morogoro Region. This study focuses exclusively on the "Ubena of the Rivers" in Ulanga and Kilombero Districts, Morogoro Region, and reflects the wish of the Bena elders "for a permanent record of their tribal history and customs, to preserve the memory of what must soon be forgotten if not committed to writing" (Preface). It depicts all aspects of tribal culture, including social and tribal organisation, the practice of their religion, tribal medicine, daily life, and histories of their royal families. Their study of the Bena religion is especially important, as the population is largely… Read More

Description:
London: Gaberbocchus Press,, 1951. First edition in English, first impression, of the first opus in the Ubu plays by Parisian proto-surrealist Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), best remembered for this notorious work and the invention of pataphysics, as well as for riding a bicycle through the streets of Paris painted green in honour of his "green goddess", absinthe. The first edition was published in French in April 1896. Barbara Wright, the translator, wrote the text directly onto litho plates, on which Franciszka Themerson (1907-1988), a Polish, later British, painter, illustrator, filmmaker and stage designer, then drew 204 illustrations. Themerson's continuing involvement with Ubu Roi culminated in a comic-strip version (1967-70) comprising 90 one-metre-long drawings. The play premiered in 1928 at Osvobozené divadlo, with Werich in the role of Ubu. We have only been able to trace one earlier translation of this work, into Czech, by actors and writers Jirí Voskovec (1905-1981) and Jan Werich… Read More

Description:
Königsberg: den Friedrich Nicolovius,, 1791. Kant versus the rationalists Second edition, published a year after the first, of On a Discovery whereby Any New Critique of Pure Reason Is to Be Made Superfluous by an Older One, a self-defence of Kantian philosophy. The publication of Kant's first Critique (of Pure Reason) in 1781 provoked considerable controversy, the field of German philosophy splitting into Kantian and anti-Kantian factions. The two sides pursued an extended dispute across journals, books, and lectures. Among the most dangerous to Kant was the work of Johann August Eberhard (1739-1809), a professor of theology at Halle and a committed Leibnizian rationalist, who had founded the Philosophisches Magazin in 1788 as an organ for Kantian criticism. The Discovery, provoked by Eberhard's early articles in the Magazin, constitutes Kant's primary contribution to the controversy. Ultimately, the Kantians would win the dispute. The second edition corrects various typographical errors in the… Read More

"When Zukovsky began his tutoring, Alexander was only seven. Zhukovsky devoted himself totally to the royal scion. The poet wrote to his sister, 'My real duty will take up all my time. Farewell forever to poetry with rhyme. A poetry of another sort lies ahead of me.' In his hands lay the future of Russia. Zhukovsky put together a ten-year plan of… Read More

Description:
London: William P. Nimmo,, 1875. In a stylish Zaehnsdorf binding First edition. Short of income after being removed as British consul to Damascus in 1871, Burton accepted a lucrative offer to search for sulphur in Iceland. The resulting work participates in the late Victorian surge of interest in Norse culture and the Icelandic sagas, Burton's journey taking place between William Morris's famous tours in 1871 and 1873. Burton set out in May 1872, travelling via Orkney, Shetland, and the Faroe Islands, landing at Reykjavik on 8 June and spending three months on the island. His account is rich in detail on local topography, customs, and history. "The main object of the book has been to advocate the development of the island" (p. xiii). Provenance: bound for Robert Tyndall Hamilton Bruce (1847-1899), a Scottish businessman who operated a series of bakeries in Glasgow. A lover of the arts, "his major achievement in the public sphere was the leading role he played in organizing French and Dutch painting… Read More

Description:
New York: Blue Note,, 1968. First pressing, signed in full by Jones in blue ball-point on the back cover, with slight ink splatter from the forceful initial downward stroke on the "E" of "Elvin" - a not inappropriate "blemish" considering the almost volcanic force of the great drummer's playing, whose autograph on an album is certainly uncommon. Jones is joined here by fellow Coltrane alumnus Jimmy Garrison, and saxophonist Joe Farrell, and in many ways this is Farrell's album. Scott Yanow's review for AllMusic website remarks that this is one of the saxophonist's "finest recordings. Switching between tenor, soprano and flute, Farrell had to be good because he was joined in the pianoless trio by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. The group performs two standards, three Garrison originals and one by Farrell; it is a tossup as to who takes honors. Farrell is in consistently creative form but Garrison's occasional solos and Jones's polyrhythmic accompaniment are also noteworthy. This LP is… Read More

Description:
Paris: Shakespeare and Company,, 1922. Luxurious issue of the defining modernist novel First edition, number 220 of 150 copies from the large-paper issue numbered 101-250, here finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with Irish motifs and with the distinctive original blue wrappers bound in. As recorded in Sylvia Beach's notebook, kept from 21 May 1921 to 1 July 1922 to account for the original customers of Ulysses, this copy was ordered by Sybil Amhurst on 11 May 1922. The watercolourist Sybil Margaret Tyssen-Amhurst (1858-1926), of Didlington Hall in Norfolk, came from the family of book and antique collectors whose Egyptian artefacts inspired the young Howard Carter. The family later recommended him for missions in Egypt, setting in motion his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, the same year that Ulysses was published. Sybil Amhurst also travelled to Egypt: "Once, deep inside a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, the metallic smoke blew into Sybil's eyes and she inhaled a lung full of fumes.… Read More
