Graham Seton was the pseudonym for Graham Seton Hutchison (1890-1946), an English author, historian, and novelist. His fiction has been commended by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Ezra Pound.

Publisher's brown boards stamped with gilt on spine, blind stamped boards. Corners exposed; spine ends worn. Previous owner's inscriptions on front paste down (dated 1853 & 1868). Heavy soiling to some of the pages. The poem at the top of Chapter XIV has been torn out (replacement text for both sides of this leaf is laid in). Five illustrated plates, including frontispiece (each is hand watercolored by a previous owner). 233 pp. 6.25 x 3.75 inches. Mrs. J. Thayer states in the preface that this novel was written with the intention of cultivating in young hearts the beauty of an unselfish, amiable character and a loving spirit, to impel children to endear their mothers with love and to lift their hearts higher, to love the whole human race and God, and incite them to good actions.

Previous owner's name on ffep, else internally clean. pp. 85, plus [8] advertising. 6.5 x 3.5 inches. 1903 soup and entree cookbook by chef Joseph N. Vachon (1860-1929), who was at the time employed at The Transit House in Chicago, a fine hotel owned by the Union Stock Yard and Transit Company. The hotel burned down in 1912. He followed with employment at two other historic hotels: 15 years at the New Harper Hotel in Rock Island and then for a few years at the LeClaire Hotel in Moline. Includes about fifty pages of entree recipes, followed by forty pages of soups and an index. Concludes with an eight-page catalog of cookbooks and hotelier guides published by the Hotel Monthly Press.

James Bird (d. 1874, London) was educated at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and became a Licentiate of the Apothecaries' Society in 1821, and Member of the Royal Society of Surgeons in 1825. He began his practice at Cardiff, where he was Surgeon to the Royal Glamorgan Light Infantry Regiment Militia. After a few years he relocated to Portman Square in London where he was to maintain a considerable practice, retiring in about 1856.
