A very rare leaflet printing the text of a speech delivered by Wyoming Senator Joseph M. Carey to the National-American Woman Suffrage Convention in Washington, D.C. on February 27, 1891. Senator Carey details the history of suffrage as it relates to the organization of the state of Wyoming, where "the principle of equality of citizenship without regard to sex had been fully recognized and incorporated as part of the Constitution of the new State." He then details a concerted effort by the Wyoming Legislature to repeal the law which provided for women's suffrage in the state, which ultimately failed after being vetoed and coming up one vote short in the Legislature's attempt to override. A report prepared following the enactment of an Ohio constitutional amendment requiring the state to set a minimum wage. This report summarizes responses to a state-wide survey about women's wages in department stores and other retail establishments, providing statistics on wages by both city and age group. The most common wage was $6 per week, and the most common number of hours worked was 52. An interesting tool in the historical investigation of women's work.

Scarce promotional and pictorial letter sheet that promotes land in the Waggoner Colony, a large section of the Waggoner Ranch between the town of Electra and the Red River that was sold off during the early 1900s. "The Waggoner (Three D) Ranch had its beginnings in the early 1850s when Daniel Waggoner and a fifteen-year-old black slave trailed 242 longhorn cattle and six horses into Wise County.... Between 1889 and 1903 the ranch came to cover a block running thirty miles east and west and twenty-five miles north and south, including more than a million acres. Occasional minor wear and some soiling to letters, some wear to manuals and pamphlets. A tidy collection of letters, an original pencil sketch and accompanying manuscript documents, military and other manuals and pamphlets, received greeting cards and V-Mail, two photographs, and assorted ephemera sent to or belonging to a pair of Japanese-American brothers who both served in the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team during the Second World War, and assorted members of their family. Naval Asylum: January, 1848. Very good.. [3]pp., on a single folded folio sheet of lined paper, docketed in pencil on verso of the second leaf, "Dr. Garnett's Essay." Old folds, light toning, minor darkening along folds. A manuscript essay authored by Dr. Alexander Yelverton Peyton Garnett (1820-1888), a Navy surgeon recently returned from overseas service. Dr. Garnett was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's medical program and served as an assistant surgeon in the United States Navy until his retirement in the year the present work was created. He thereafter practiced medicine in Washington, D.C. until the outbreak of the Civil War. Ever a Virginian, Dr. Garnett served prominently as a surgeon for the Confederate Army, and as the personal physician to both Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee. After the war, he continued in private practice in Richmond, then Washington, D.C. and in 1886 served as the president of the American Medical Association. Inked calculation along side of back cover. A rare issue of an uncommon midcentury periodical devoted to African-American automobile ownership. The publisher, Joseph Varney Baker (1908-1993) was the first African American to own a public relations business when he started one in 1934. His client list included Chrysler and several other major corporations such as American Tobacco Company, DuPont, Gillette, NBC, Pennsylvania Railroad, Procter & Gamble, RCA, Scott Paper, U.S. Steel, and Western Union. All of the advertising in this magazine is for various cars manufactured by Chrysler (Imperial, Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth). The Wayfarer was aimed at African-American car buyers or owners. San Francisco; Los Angeles: C.F. Weber & Co, 1914. Still very good.. Folding map, 20 x 26.5 inches. Original printed wrappers. Small perforation at upper margin of wraps, also slightly affecting upper map border. A few slight separations at fold points. Light tanning. A scarce and attractive folding map of Sierra County, California, "Showing towns, steam and electric railroads, wagon and automobile roads, township and section lines, rivers, creeks, reclamation and irrigation districts, etc." The map clearly marks out township plats. County lines are delineated in pink, with the map centered on Sierra County, but also it also depicts the northern part of Nevada County, the southern part of Plumas County, and the eastern tip of Yuba County. OCLC locates three copies, at the Huntington, the California Historical Society, and UC Berkeley.

St. Louis: F.L. Rand Company, 1926. Very good.. [2],246pp. Original red cloth stamped in black. Minor scuffing and edge wear to boards. Hinges a bit over-opened, but very clean internally. A handsome pocket dictionary from the early-20th century produced as a promotional item for a shoe store in rural Texas. The front cover reads, "Webster's Poll-Parrot Dictionary Made Expressly for Freitag & Kamas Kenney, Texas 'Star Brand Shoes and Better.'" Kenney is a tiny, unincorporated town located about halfway between Austin and Houston. The Freitag & Kamas shoe store would have used the present dictionary likely as a giveaway or prize for its younger customers. Interestingly, though the publishers of the dictionary use his name freely, and state that the present work was "based upon the original foundation laid by" Noah Webster, the title page states that "This Dictionary is not published by the original publishers of Webster's Dictionary, or by their successors." Map with small, unobtrusive tape repair at gutter margin and a couple of short separations along folds. The first general directory of Yolo County, the first Yolo County history, and one of the most comprehensive of all 19th-century California county guides and directories, only issued in a small number of copies to subscribers. The initial 200 pages comprise the extensive general history of the county, followed by the lengthy directory, which is separated into residential and business registers. A scarce, profusely illustrated trade catalog for this Iowa harness company based in the town of Waterloo. The publication advertises and illustrates nearly forty different types of available harnesses, hundreds of harness parts, and several styles of saddle. "Every piece of work we send out represents us.... We use nothing but the best Oak Leather and guarantee all of our harness to be equal to the best in Workmanship and Durability.

Mexico City, 1968. Very good.. 79,[1]pp. Printed self-wrappers. Light tanning, very minor wear. A nice example of this bilingual guidebook to Mexico, with listings of events for a mid-January week in in 1968, and suggestions and advice on travel, restaurants, sights, hotels, markets, and other attractions, and includes information for many smaller cities and towns beyond Mexico City. The cover art promotes Villahermosa, in the state of Tabasco.

Pampa, Tx: T.D. Hobart, 1905. Near fine.. 38pp. Narrow 12mo. Original tan printed wrappers, stapled. Clean and fresh. Handsome promotional work selling lands surrounding the small Texas Panhandle town of White Deer in Carson, Gray, Hutchinson, and Roberts Counties. In addition to a thorough description of the area and the lands for sale, the work is well illustrated with halftones of photographs and several maps of the region. A handful of copies in OCLC, almost entirely in Texas institutions. A good, early 20th-century promotional for this very isolated part of Texas.

Whittier: Board of Trade, 1906. Very good.. 16pp. Oblong octavo. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Light soiling and wear. Published less than twenty years after Whittier was founded by Quakers, this promotional work proudly proclaims that "there is now town of its size that will rank higher in intelligence, morality, and progressiveness." Just fourteen miles from Los Angeles, with a population of about 4,000 people, Whittier boasted easy access by rail, a college, hospital, library, an abundance of water, and a budding oil industry. It did not have saloons, and "consequently no need of a jail; and no paupers." Illustrated throughout with half tones, including a panoramic bird's eye view of the town. Relatively scarce, with only four copies located in OCLC, at UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, Swarthmore College, and the Merrimack Valley Library.

Nashville: National Baptist Publishing Board, 1938. Very good.. 8pp. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Wrappers a bit dusty, mild rubbing and edge wear. The rare first edition of Dr. E.H. Borden's impassioned personal history and essay on why he identifies as a Baptist. At the time he wrote the present essay. Dr. Borden was serving as the pastor of the Live Oak Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas. Born near Nova Scotia, Canada, Borden credits his early conversion to his mother, Susie M. Borden, but ultimately that his "personal choice and conviction were confirmed and enlightened by study." He then enumerates a dozen reasons he stands by his Baptist faith, ranging from "Because I am a Christian" to "I believe in the 'voluntariness of religion'" and "I believe in immersion, the immersion of one who has already surrendered his heart and life to Christ," among others. Borden's work was published by the National Baptist Publishing Board, an important African American publishing house in Nashville.… Read More

A 1944 campaign brochure issued by the Board of Directors of the New York African American newspaper, The People's Voice. The board, headed by Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., here "calls upon the Negro people of America -- and especially the people of our own Harlem -- to raise their voices in an overpowering demand for the reelection of Franklin Delano Roosevelt for a fourth term as President." Powell and his colleagues also argue that FDR "symbolizes the road ahead to a better world and a more democratic America." They continue to enumerate the reasons they support FDR, including Roosevelt's support for the United Nations, labor unions, equal wages, anti-discrimination policies in federal programs and the military, and because FDR fights against poll taxes and "the reactionary enemies of the people who now control the Republican Party." "For your convenience you will find this directory to contain a complete and revised list of the names aand [sic] locations of the Streets and Avenues of Wichita, Alphabetically arranged." Each street is listed, numbered north and south from Douglas Avenue and east and west of Main Street, the two major thoroughfares in town. Position and length of the streets is also given: "Arnold Ave. -- Between 16th and 17th; N. Lawrence Ave. E to Emporia." Includes several advertising testimonials, as well as a summary of traffic regulations for the city. We locate one copy in OCLC, at Wichita State University.

Santee, Ne: Santee Normal Training School, 1911. Very good.. 15,[1]pp. Original green printed wrappers, stitched. Lower corner of rear cover lacking, minor soiling. Internally clean. Short digest of significant lines from the New Testaments on an array of religious subjects, as well as the Lord's Prayer, translated into the Dakota language by long-serving Santee missionary Alfred L. Riggs. Printed on the mission press of the Santee Normal Training School on the Santee Reservation in northeastern Nebraska, on the banks of the Missouri River. OCLC locates a small handful of institutional copies.

San Francisco: Theatrical Publishing Co, 1889. Very good.. Broadside, 17 x 6 inches. Previously folded. Small closed tear at top edge. Even tanning. An attractive broadside advertisement for entertainments at a downtown San Francisco theater in 1889. The Wigwam Theater was built in 1884 on the corner of Stockton and Geary Streets as a headquarters and event space for the presidential campaign of the Blaine and Logan Republican ticket. After Blaine lost the election to Grover Cleveland, the Republican party leased the brick and sheet iron building to an Austrian immigrant named Gustav Walter, who operated it first as a beer hall, and then turned it into a venue for variety and vaudeville acts in the late 1880s. The present broadside promotes a slate of acts to be performed on March 11, 1889, that range from vaudevillians and sketch comedians to acrobats and prestidigitators. Williams, Mt: Western Office, 1920. Good.. 8pp. Two loose folio sheets. Previously folded, with several separations repaired with tape along old folds. Even tanning. An unrecorded promotional for the town of Williams, Montana. In its post-World War I heyday, it thrived as a result of its proximity to the Valier Irrigation Project and its location on the purpose-built spur from the Great Northern Railroad, but today is a ghost town east of Valier. The text extolls these geographic virtues of the town, as well as the agricultural benefits from the irrigation project and the good prospects from Montana's other industries in the region. Perhaps most valuable are the descriptions of the town as it existed in 1919 -- its businesses, its residences, its attractions -- and accompanying photographic illustrations.
